Package: javarunt
Release: 20031009
Obsoletes: none

Indications

This update should be installed on all systems that have the javarunt
package installed.

Problem description

This update fixes a local security weakness in the SuSEconfig script of the javarunt package. This script is responsible for adding a symlink to the java wrapper program to allow for easy switching of the java thread type.
The weakness is based on a symlink race condition in a shell script. The script writes to a file in the /tmp directory, thereby allowing a local attacker to overwrite arbitrary files on the system if the attacker can place a symlink within a narrow timewindow. The resulting vulnerability allows a local attacker to gain root privileges.

Solution

Please install the updates provided at the location noted below.
