Indications

This update should be installed by anyone using xchat.

Problem description

CTCP (client-to-client protocol) PING requests containing carefully encoded IRC protocol commands can be executed by xchat without the user knowing about it. This may be used by an attacker to perform social engineering attacks, channel takeovers and denial of service attacks.
This weakness affects only irc protocol commands that are being sent to the IRC server to which the client under attack is connected to. Local commands on the client host can not be executed.

Solution

Please install the updates provided at the location noted below.

Installation notes

This update is provided as an RPM package that can easily be installed onto a running system by using this command:
rpm -Fvh xchat.rpm
