(Last modified: 18JAN2002)

solutions Security bugfix for xchat SuSE Linux Maintenance Web (e079bb5075f8b8e5cca3dd1c5b73b249)

Applies to

Product(s): SuSE Linux Enterprise Server for S/390

Package: gnm3/xchat
Release: 20020118
Obsoletes: none

This update should be installed by anyone using xchat.

Problem description

CTCP (client-to-client protocol) PING requests containing carefully encoded IRC protocol commands can be executed by xchat without the user knowing about it. This may be used by an attacker to perform social engineering attacks, channel takeovers and denial of service attacks.
This weakness affects only irc protocol commands that are being sent to the IRC server to which the client under attack is connected to. Local commands on the client host can not be executed.
