Indications

This update should be installed by everyone using rpasswdd or needing login names with captial letters or a full stop character (".").

Contraindications

None.

Problem description

An rpasswd client can crash a rpasswdd child process which handles the connection. The parent rpasswdd process is still running and accepts new connections. This update fixes the problem.
The update also enables the creation of login names that contain capital letters or the full stop character ("."), such as "Firstname.Lastname". Please note that various applications may not accept login names above a certain length or with punctation marks. Furthermore, some services such as e-mail do not differentiate the case of the login name.

Installation notes

This update is provided as an RPM package that can easily be installed onto a running system by using this command:
rpm -Fvh shadow.rpm
