solutions Security Bugfix for Fileutils SuSE Linux Maintenance Web (ab480a77bc2ddfd55cde9f3d309f87df)

Applies to

Product(s): SuSE Linux Database Server

SuSE Linux Enterprise Server for S/390

Package: fileutil
Release: 20020326
Obsoletes: none

Indications

This update should be installed by everyone.

Contraindications

None.

Problem description

When recursively removing directory trees, the rm(1) command will do a 'cd ..', which leads to a race condition when directories are being removed from world-writeable directories. By consequence, any local user could remove system-owned directories as the user running the recursive 'rm -r' command, typically root. No temporary workaround for this problem exists other than not recursively removing directories within world-writeable directory structures while users are active.

Solution

Please install the updates provided at the location noted below.

Installation notes

This update is provided as an RPM package that can easily be installed onto a running system by using this command:
rpm -Uvh fileutil.rpm
It is recommended to run "SuSEconfig" after performing the update in case the update rpm command is being run manually.
Note:
Please be advised that the fix for this package has been included in the Live-CD for Firewall version 1.0.22-1 Release 20020328.
