Problem description

This update addresses two different vulnerabilities in the openssl library that can be used by an attacker to crash the program that makes use of the openssl routines and functions.
The first vulnerability is known as "NULL pointer during SSL handshake (CAN-2004-0079)" - an attacker can cause the openssl library to crash upon reception of a carefully crafted packet from the attacker. This may result in a Denial of Service attack, depending on the application that makes use of the openssl functions.
The second vulnerability affects Kerberos Ciphersuites, identified as CAN-2004-0112. A remote attacker can run an attack against a server that is configured to use Kerberos Ciphersuites. The attack can result in a crash within the openssl library during SSL/TLS handshake. Most applications that link against openssl are unaffected because they do not make use of the Kerberos Ciphersuites.

Note: After the installation of this update, your system will continue to use the openssl shared libraries that have been deleted during the update. Programs that are being started after the openssl update has been performed will operate with the updated version. If you wish that all of your processes in your system use the new library, then please either reboot your system or make the transition from your default runlevel to runlevel 1 and back.

Please install the updates provided at the location noted below.

rpm -Fvh openssl.rpm
