The first vulnerability is known as "NULL pointer during SSL handshake (CAN-2004-0079)" - an attacker can cause the openssl library to crash upon reception of a carefully crafted packet from the attacker. This may result in a Denial of Service attack, depending on the application that makes use of the openssl functions.
The second vulnerability affects Kerberos Ciphersuites, identified as CAN-2004-0112. A remote attacker can run an attack against a server that is configured to use Kerberos Ciphersuites. The attack can result in a crash within the openssl library during SSL/TLS handshake. Most applications that link against openssl are unaffected because they do not make use of the Kerberos Ciphersuites.
The two vulnerabilites that are subject to this update have been discovered by
CAN-2004-0079:
- The openssl project while performing testing against the TLS test suite developed by Codenomicon, and in cooperation with the NISCC.
- Stephen Henson.
