Applies to

Product(s): SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 7 for PowerPC

Package: initviocons
Release: 20020725
Obsoletes: none

Indications

Users having installed PTFs (Problem Temporary Fixes) MF28765 and MF28917, and using the telnet clients on Microsoft Windows, should update this package.

Contraindications

You should not install this patch if you have not installed PTFs (Problem Temporary Fixes) MF28765 and MF28917 on your system.

Problem description

The iSeries console server that allows to access the linux console via telnet port 2301 used to handle connected Microsoft Windows telnet clients specially: it would pass both carriage return and newline on to the application, resulting in two line breaks, if the Enter key was pressed. This feature was worked around by initviocons initializing the terminal to ignore carriage return in these cases. Now, with MF28765 and MF28917 IBM issued Program Temporary Fixes for this (and other problems), the Network Virtual Terminal newline is handled by the server in accordance with RFC854.
This patch includes a patch to work correctly with the changed console server behaviour that is present if the PTFs mentioned above have been installed.
It is not strictly necessary to install the update if the telnet client used is not running on Microsoft Windows, but e.g. on Linux.
