Package: nkitb
Release: 20021213
Obsoletes: none

Indications

Everyone using traceroute should install this patch.

Contraindications

None.

Problem description

The traceroute program is installed "setuid root" to allocate a raw IP-Socket and a raw ICMP-Socket. A local attacker can gain access to the raw socket on a system where traceroute is installed due to two buffer overflows. This update fixes these buffer overflows. Please note that root privileges are dropped right after allocating the raw sockets, which stops an attacker from gaining full root access to the system.
