Applies to

Product(s): SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 7 for PowerPC

Package: kernel-ppc64
Release: 20030815
Obsoletes: b32479954fbead6e0091d140ed977ffe

Indications

This update should be installed on all systems for security reasons.
This article applies to systems with the kernel-ppc64 kernel package installed, please use the appropriate kernel package if you are using a different kernel:
You can find out which kernel package you are using with
rpm -qf /boot/vmlinuz

Contraindications

None.

Description

This kernel fixes the following vulnerabilities and bugs:
  • fix for an integer signedness bug of the NFSv3 implementation in the function decode_fh() of nfs3xdr.c which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (kernel panic) by sending specially crafted XDR data in an NFSv3 procedure call (CAN-2003-0619)
  • fix for a problem where /proc/iSeries/config remains blank.

Solution

Please install the updates provided at the location noted below.

Installation notes

This update is provided as an RPM package that can easily be installed onto a running system by using these commands:
rpm -Uvh kernel-ppc64.rpm mk_initrd lilo
Note: If you do not execute the commands "mk_initrd" and "lilo", your system might be in an unbootable state. To ensure that the fixes become active, you have to reboot your system.
After installation of the kernel RPM, rebuilding the initial ram disk and updating the boot loader, reboot the system with
shutdown -r now
to load the new kernel (replace "now" with the appropriate amount of time to allow local users to cleanly log out, for example "+5" for five minutes.)
