Product(s): SuSE Linux Enterprise Server for S/390

Package: bind9
Release: 20020603
Obsoletes: none

Indications

Anyone using bind9 should update this package.

Problem description

ISC reported a vulnerability in the BIND9 DNS server that causes all server processes to log an error message and exit when processing certain DNS messages.
This vulnerability can be used in denial of service attacks, where the attacker sends malicious DNS queries to the server, but reportedly, it is also possible to trigger such queries via other system services (e.g. sendmail) that can take down the DNS server.
Note that it is not enough to upgrade the bind9 package itself, you must upgrade the bind9-utils package, because it contains the shared library that has the fix for this vulnerability.
