solutions Recommended update for package samba-client SuSE Linux Maintenance Web (374ce9ec71f665f7e5e2cc7e4570b3dd)

Applies to

Product(s): SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 for IBM zSeries

Package: samba-client
Release: 20030612
Obsoletes: none

Indications

Everyone using the Samba winbind service via /etc/nsswitch.conf should install this update.

Contraindications

None.

Problem description

Due to a wrong pointer cast in the winbind Name Service Switch (NSS) part of the Samba software, name resolving of user and group information from a Microsoft Windows or a Samba server is impossible on IBM zSeries (64bit) systems.
A configuration of /etc/nsswitch.conf as described in the winbind manual page ('man 8 winbindd') results in 99% CPU usage and a memory leak which could crash the system.

Solution

Please install the updates provided at the location noted below.

Installation notes

This update is provided as an RPM package that can easily be installed onto a running system by using this command:
rpm -Fvh samba-client.rpm
Note: As a running Name Service Cache DÆmon (nscd) might still use the old library loaded into the memory even after this update has been installed, you'll additionally have to restart ncsd by using the command
rcnscd status && rcnscd restart
