Indications

This update should be installed by users of the IBM Java SDK or a Chinese locale.

Contraindications

None.

Problem description

This update fixes the most problems with the IBM Java SDK in
connection with the pthread implementation of glibc 2.2.2. In detail,
the following bugs have been fixed:
  • Pthread race conditions
  • Profile counting on 31 bit does not work.
  • libSegFault does not work.
  • Missing definition in resource.h
Additionally, the update contains a fix in the collate code for double-byte characters used for sorting in Chinese locale.
This update is not mandatory if you do not use IBM Java SDK or a Chinese locale.

Solution

Please install the updates provided at the location noted below.

Installation notes

This update is provided as an RPM package that can be installed onto a running system by bringing the system into single user mode first. Use the 3270 console, login as the z/VM linux guest, login as user "root" to the linux system and run the command
init 1
This will stop the network connection and any running processes. You may need to enter the root password again, afterwards install the new glibc RPM with
rpm -Uvh glibc.rpm
Now bring the system back to runlevel 3 with
init 3
or re-IPL the linux system.
