Indications

This kernel update for Linux kernel 2.4.13 is highly recommended to improve the stability on iSeries systems.

Problem description

This kernel update improves the stability on iSeries systems. The following problems were fixed:
  • kernel stack corruption
  • time drifts when running ntpd
  • enable autofs
  • improve veth driver
  • fix possible filesystem corruption with the ibmsis driver
  • update JFS to 1.0.20
  • add fibre channel driver for Emulex cards, modulename: lpfcdd.o
  • add network driver for Intel EtherExpress 100/1000, modulename: e100.o, e1000.o
  • generate entropy for /dev/random
  • correct viodasd reporting in /proc, use of LVM now possible
  • ReiserFS fixes

Solution

Please install the updates provided at the location noted below.

Installation notes

This update is provided as an RPM package that can easily be installed onto a running system by using these commands:
  1. Install the new kernel: rpm -Uvh kernel-iseries64.rpm
  2. Update the INITRD: mk_initrd
  3. Run LILO: lilo
Now reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
