Indications

All AMD64 machines running a PostgreSQL server should apply this patch.

Contraindications

None.

Problem description

The PostgreSQL server for AMD64, as shipped on the CDs, uses slow semaphores instead of fast test-and-set locks resulting in a major slowdown of PostgreSQL. This patch fixes this drawback.

Solution

Please install the updates provided at the location noted below.

Installation notes

This update is provided as a RPM package.
Before installing this patch you must shutdown PostgreSQL with the following command:
rcpostgresql stop
The patch can be easily installed onto a running system by using this command:
rpm -Fvh postgresql-server.rpm
After the installation, you can restart PostgreSQL with the command
rcpostgresql start
