Indications

This update should be installed on all machines that make use of the ircd (IRC
server/daemon).

Problem description

A buffer overflow makes it possible for a local user to crash the IRC daemon.
A local user in this context is an IRC user whose IRC chat client is connected to your IRC server. By consequence, users who are connected to other IRC servers in your IRC network cannot crash your server.
After applying the update, it is necessary to restart your IRC server. To do so, you can either chose to warn your (connected) users about the pending restart of the server and restart afterwards using IRC server commands as operator, or you can restart it using the command
rcircd restart
as root.

Solution

Please install the updates provided at the location noted below.

Installation notes

This update is provided as an RPM package that can easily be installed onto a running system by using this command:
rpm -Fvh ircd.rpm
After performing this update, the IRC server must be restarted for the update to become effective:
rcircd restart
