Using Novell's Year 2000 Information Ferret to Determine Your Y2K Status

With the next millennium just about the corner, there is a tremendous amount of work to accomplish and little time left. This article provides information on how Novell's Year 2000 Information Ferret will collect data from your Novell servers and, when the data is sent to Novell for analysis, can assist in ensuring that your Novell products are Year 2000 Ready.

Introduction
With the next millennium just around the corner there is a tremendous amount of work to accomplish and little time left. One of the most daunting tasks faced is determining the Year 2000 status of software. With the demand for Year 2000 information increasing, and the need to get this information into customers hands quickly, Novell is providing the Year 2000 Information Ferret to enhance our ability to respond promptly to these requests.
Novell's Year 2000 Information Ferret will collect data from your Novell servers and, when the data is sent to Novell for analysis, can assist in ensuring that your Novell products are Year 2000 Ready. What is the Information Ferret?
Novell's Year 2000 Information Ferret is a Windows 95/98 or Windows NT client application that gathers server and server resident file information from your SYS, SYSTEM, PUBLIC and ETC directories. From this information Novell can provide you with a report identifying the Year 2000 status of Novell products that have been installed in these directories, and also those loaded in memory when the Ferret is run.
Run the Ferret, scan the selected servers, then send the data to Novell. Upon receipt of the files Novell will produce a report and send it to you. The report will provide server-by-server details of which Novell products were found and what action is required, if any, to make the product ready for the next millennium.
How to Send the Files
There are three methods to send the data to Novell.
FTP After the Year 2000 Information Ferret is run on all your servers select SEND then select FTP. When you select the FTP button, your browser will be opened and will go to the FTP upload site. (NetScape preferred, FTP upload not supported by Microsoft's Internet Explorer) Select Upload Zip Files then right click on windows Start and select Explore. In Explore double-click on the C:\Novell\Ferret folder to open it. Reduce the window size so you can see both the FTP site and Explore windows on the screen. Select file(s) in the C:\Novell\Ferret directory with an extension of .ZIP then drag and drop the selected files from the Explore window to the FTP window. Select OK in the FTP window to send the files to Novell. Go to the Explore window and drag the .ZIP files to an archive directory to prevent re-sending of the same data. If necessary, create a new folder under Ferret to archive the .ZIP file(s).
Note: This FTP upload capability is not supported by Microsoft's Internet Explorer as documented in their Article ID: Q142851) Please use Netscape Navigator 4 or other FTP client software and upload the files to Novell's Y2K FTP Upload Site.
E-mail After the Year 2000 Information Ferret is run on all your servers select SEND then select E-mail. When you select this E-mail button, your default E-mail software will be opened, a new message will be created and addressed to Y2K@Novell.com. (If your E-mail does not open automatically, simply open your E-mail, create a new message and enter the address) Add the Subject Year 2000 Assessment attach the file(s) with a .ZIP extension from the C:\Novell\Ferret directory to the E-mail message, then send the E-mail message. After sending the E-mail drag the .ZIP files to an archive directory to prevent re-sending of the same data.
MAIL (If you only have a few servers, no E-mail access and no Web access) After the Year 2000 Information Ferret is run on all your servers select SEND then select DISK, which will copy the .ZIP file(s) from the A drive. Mail the disk to Novell at the following address:

After sending the files move them to an archive directory to avoid sending the same files again.
Q. How do I get the report(s) from Novell once I send the ZIP files?
A. The resulting report will be mailed to you at the address specified in the Ferret profile.

Q. How much does this service cost?
A. This service is currently free. The demand for Year 2000 information from Novell is increasing while the time to resolve Year 2000 issues is getting short. The Year 2000 Information Ferret is being provided to meet customer demand for this information.
Q. What access control rights do I need to use the Year 2000 information Ferret?
A. To obtain the maximum value this tool can provide, you must have Supervisor or Administrator rights to the servers you wish to scan. If you do not have these rights the Year 2000 Information Ferret will only report on the version of NetWare on your server(s) and not on other Novell products.
Q. What happens if I cannot access all of my servers?
A. All servers to be scanned must be online and accessible to the user of the Year 2000 Information Ferret. If a server is not accessible when the software is executed, Year 2000 status information will not be available for that server. The Year 2000 Information Ferret can be executed again when the server is available.
Q. What impact will running this tool have on my network performance?
A. Operation of the Year 2000 Information Ferret in a WAN environment does consume some network bandwidth and may time-out across slow links. To avoid this situation, distribute this application to remote sites and execute the software after-hours if scanning a large number of NetWare servers.
Q. How can I centrally collect the reports from the Year 2000 Information Ferret?
A. The Profile information, which is required prior to scanning server(s), includes a field called "Send Report to." This field is intended to allow the collection of the reports at a central location. Enter an E-mail address in this field that would be common to those desiring to send the reports to a single location.

If you are using other Novell products or Novell products not listed in these tables, Novell recommends upgrading to a newer product as indicated below, or discontinuing use before the turn of the century. All Year 2000 Ready Novell products require a Year 2000 Ready hardware platform (BIOS/RTC).
