Sun Releases Java JumpStart Development Solution

Sun Microsystems, Inc. has announced the commercial availability of Java JumpStart, a CD-ROM package designed to boost developer productivity by providing fast and convenient access to Sun's latest Java development and deployment technology. The Java JumpStart software allows enterprise application developers, independent software vendors (ISVs) and system integrators to create more easily applets and applications that meet Sun's 100% Pure Java specification.

The Java JumpStart software includes the latest Java Development Kit (JDK) software, the Java Plug-in software, on-line books, sample code and extensive documentation. Java Plug-in enables an enterprise to deploy applets that take full advantage of the latest capabilities and features of the Java platform and be assured that they will run reliably and consistently in Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. The Java JumpStart software also includes the quick update service feature that enables enterprise application developers to download the latest updates to the JDK 1.1 platform.

"The Java JumpStart software is the essential technology resource for application developers utilizing the Java programming language because it enables them to streamline their efforts to create applets and applications that meet the 100% Pure Java specification and run on Java Compatible runtime environments," said Jonathan Schwartz, director of product marketing at Sun's Java Software division.

The Java JumpStart software provides access to over 600 MB of Java software and technology resources. In addition to the core Java technologies such as the latest Java Development Kit, the Java JumpStart software contains on-line books from Addison-Wesley, the Macintosh Runtime for Java documentation, and archives of older versions of the Java Development Kit (such as JDK 1.0.2, 1.1.2, 1.1.3 and 1.1.4). The Java JumpStart software supports Sun Microsystems' Solaris 2.5 or later (SPARC/x86), Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or later, Microsoft Windows 95 or later.
