Netscape and Novell Announce Strategic Agreement To Deliver Intranet Solutions
Netscape Communications Corporation and Novell announced on March 21, 1977 that they have signed a strategic agreement to deliver a broad range of Intranet and Extranet solutions on current and future Novell platforms. The companies plan to form a privately-held new company based in Utah, to be called Novonyx, that will adapt, integrate and sell the Netscape SuiteSpot family of server software on the Novell IntranetWare networking platform.
Novell and Netscape will collaborate to integrate their products and networking services for networked enterprise customers building Intranet and Extranet applications. Novell and Netscape plan to form the new company following government review.
The agreement combines the number one server platform in the world with Netscape SuiteSpot's Internet technology leadership. Today, Novell has the largest installed base of network servers in the world with more than four million servers running the Novell network operating system and serving information to more than 60 million users. Netscape's proven Internet technology leadership has captured significant industry momentum, an installed based of 50 million copies of Netscape software and a host of top industry awards.
"This agreement is about providing our customers with freedom of choice and more Intranet solutions," said Joseph A. Marengi, Novell president and chief operating officer. "Novell and Netscape share a vision of providing integrated, open standards-based intranetworking software to enterprise customers. Working together through Novonyx, we plan to combine Novell's commanding marketshare and premier directory-enabled networking platform with Netscape's Intranet server software."
"Novell is the number one provider of networking software in corporations today and ships more copies of server operating system software than Windows NT or UNIX - that's a huge untapped opportunity for Netscape," said Jim Barksdale, president and chief executive officer of Netscape. "Together, Novell and Netscape plan to pursue this fantastic market opportunity through Novonyx, and are working today to make Netscape's Intranet and Extranet solutions available to customers running Novell IntranetWare."
Netscape and Novell will provide funding for the new company and, thru Novonyx, work together to adapt and integrate Netscape server software for IntranetWare. Netscape is providing a source code license for Netscape SuiteSpot and Netscape FastTrack Server software. This agreement provides a framework for the companies to jointly promote their products and services.
To that end, Novonyx will leverage Netscape's and Novell's extensive distribution channels and infrastructure including Novell's more than 30,000 value added resellers (VARs), 1,450 Novell Authorized Education Centers and partners and 200,000 certified professionals, as well as Netscape's installed based and popular Internet site which now receives more than 125 million hits per day.
IntranetWare is Novell's comprehensive platform for a modern, full-service Intranet. IntranetWare is a complete Intranet platform that is built on Novell's industry-leading NetWare 4 and offers full TCP/IP support, directory, web publishing, network security, connectivity, enterprise management, file and print services to business networks around the world.
IntranetWare is part of Novell's networking product suite that includes GroupWise messaging and groupware, ManageWise enterprise management and Novell Directory Services.
Netscape SuiteSpot is an integrated server software suite for open email, publishing and groupware on Intranets. Netscape SuiteSpot includes ten products: Netscape Messaging Server, Netscape Collabra Server, Netscape Enterprise Server, Netscape Proxy Server, Netscape Calendar Server, Netscape Media Server, Netscape Directory Server, Netscape Certificate Server, Netscape Catalog Server and LiveWire Pro development environment.
The open architecture and native support for Internet standards in Netscape SuiteSpot enables Netscape solutions to interoperate with a broad range of proprietary and Internet-based products from other vendors. Netscape FastTrack Server is Netscape's low cost, high performance Web server software. Netscape FastTrack Server delivers many of the powerful features of Netscape Enterprise Server-including support for Java and JavaScript-in a downloadable easy-to-setup-and-use package.
Netscape Enterprise Server and Netscape FastTrack Server for IntranetWare are the first products expected on the Intranetware platform with availability planned for the Fall of 1997. The companies demonstrated the current beta version of Netscape Enterprise Server 3.0 running on IntranetWare and integrated with Novell Directory Services (NDS) at Novell's Brainshare conference.
Netscape Communications Corporation is a premier provider of open software for linking people and information over enterprise networks and the Internet. The company offers a full line of clients, servers, development tools and commercial applications to create a complete platform for next-generation, live online applications.
