Been wondering what all that SAP traffic is up to on your network? This AppNote describes a free utility that lets you easily monitor and identify the source of SAP packets...and it's a handy troubleshooting tool to boot!

Introduction

A number of utilities are available to help system administrators manage their NetWare networks. One such utility is SAPMON, which allows you to monitor the SAP (Service Advertising Protocol) traffic on your network. SAPMON displays information about the various services, such as file servers, print servers, fax servers, and other applications, that use SAP to advertise their presence on the network. From this information, you can determine which SAPs are being transmitted. This SAP information can be helpful in troubleshooting problems your workstations may be having connecting to the services on your network.

This AppNote introduces the SAPMON utility and tells how to use the various options. For reference, it also presents a list of all the currently known SAP types, along with their full-name descriptions. The documentation that comes with this utility suggests that you can use SAPMON to see if your workstation can connect to a server and what type of servers are presently available. You can also use it just to see what kind of SAP traffic is being transmitted on your network.

The SAPMON utility is a free DOS-based program that comes from the Novell European Support Centre in Germany, under the auspices of the EMEA Premium Support Group. As with other free utilities that are developed by Novell support engineers, SAPMON is provided on an "as-is" basis.

SAPMON is available for download from the Novell Research web site at http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/tools/14162.html.

How SAP Works

A brief explanation of how SAP works will help you better understand what SAPMON can show you and what the utility's various options or switches are for. If you are already familiar with the workings of SAP, you can skip this section.

SAP stands for Service Advertising Protocol. In an IPX environment, services such as file servers, print servers, fax servers, and so on, use SAP to advertise their availability on the network. This makes it possible for the clients, servers, and other devices to connect to and use these services.

Each type of service that uses SAP is assigned a four-digit hexadecimal number by Novell, followed by a name that identifies the service and the person or company that developed that service. For example, SAP Type 0007 is assigned to Novell's Print Server software, which carries the name "Print Server NOVELL - PROVO".

The structures of SAP request and response packets are as follows:

SAP Request Packet

MAC Header

IPX Header

Packet Type

2 bytes

Server Type

2 bytes

SAP Response Packet

MAC Header

Server Name

48 bytes

Network Address

4 bytes

6 bytes

A single SAP response packet can contain information about up to 7 services. The SAPMON utility decodes all relevant information from these SAP packets and displays it on the screen.

About the SAPMON Utility

You can obtain the current version of the SAPMON utility (version 1.2) by downloading the SAPMN12.EXE file from the Novell Research web site at:

http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/tools/14162.html

This self-extracting file contains the following component files:

  • SAPMON.EXE, the actual utility

  • SAPLIST.TXT, a text file that contains a list of more than 1350 SAP types with the corresponding service name to help you identify the SAPs on your network

  • SAPMON.TXT, the documentation/help file for SAPMON.EXE

The SAPLIST.TXT file must be located in the directory from which you run SAPMON.EXE. The executable file uses the descriptions contained in this text file to display the SAP information for your network. The company names you see listed have registered their SAP types with Novell.

Adding New SAP Entries to SAPLIST.TXT

Because SAPLIST.TXT is a simple text file, you can add entries for SAP types that aren't included and SAPMON.EXE will be able to use that additional information. The file format is as follows (each entry must be on its own separate line):

#### [TAB] XXXXXXXXXXX

where #### is four hexadecimal digits (such as 0005) indicating the SAP Type and XXXXXXXXXXXX is the service type description (such as "Job Server NOVELL - PROVO"). The description can be up to 255 characters long, but shorter description strings are easier to read on the screen. The SAP Type and the Description are separated by a Tab character.

Version 1.2 of the SAPMON utility can handle up to 1800 lines in the SAPLIST.TXT file. The file that comes with the utility already has over 1350 entries. If you add entries, insert them in sequential order to preserve the order by SAP Type hexadecimal numbering.

Running the SAPMON Utility

Once you have extracted the SAPMON files and placed them in the same directory, you're ready to run the program. To run SAPMON, your workstation needs to have at least the initial communications protocols loaded in order to communicate with the network. These include the following:

  • LSL.COM

  • ODI LAN driver (Ethernet, Token Ring, or ARCnet)

  • IPXODI (or equivalent protocol stack)

Any NetWare Client 32 for DOS/Windows or Windows 95 network connection will allow you to run the utility. As Client 32 supports NDIS drivers, SAPMON works with them as well. You can also run SAPMON from a Windows NT 4.0 workstation running the Novell intraNetWare Client for Windows NT. If you are on a Windows 95 or Windows NT workstation, use a DOS box to run the utility.

To start the utility with its default settings, type the following at the workstation DOS prompt:

SAPMON <Enter<

The utility will start monitoring the network segment for all SAPs. After a moment, you will see a screen similar to the one shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1: Sample output when running SAPMON without any options.

As you can see, the default display includes the SAP Type, Server Name, Socket, Hops, Network#, and Service Type, displayed as alphabetically as possible.

  • The Type column displays the SAP Type number assigned to the services as listed in the SAPLIST.TXT file: 0107, 0004, and 026B, to name a few.

  • The Server Name column displays the name assigned to the service that sent out the SAP query type, such as Servers CARTER and NINJAROBOTS.

  • The Socket column displays the socket on which each service is listening.

  • The Hops column shows how many routers there are between the workstation that is picking up the SAP information on your local segment and the particular network address/server/service type displayed under the Server Name, Network# and Service Type columns.

  • The Network# column shows the network address of the server from which this service is running (shown in the Server Name column). This can be a physical or logical network segment address or number. Most of the time it is the Internal IPX Address of the NetWare server on which this service is running.

  • The Service Type column shows the name description for the corresponding SAP Type, as listed in the SAPLIST.TXT file. As you can see, if the Service Type name is too long, it will be truncated on the screen for viewing. (See Table 1 at the end of this AppNote for a full listing of the available Service Type names and corresponding hexadecimal SAP Type numbers.)

Pausing and Exiting SAPMON

Once the program is running, you can press any key to pause the monitoring process, and then again to resume. Because SAPMON is a passive online monitor (it does not generate any packets, it just monitors the traffic), pausing the monitoring process means you won't see the packets that came during the pause time.

To stop the SAP monitoring process altogether and exit the SAPMON utility, press Ctrl+C or the Escape key.

SAPMON Options

This section describes the various options you can add when starting SAPMON to change what the utility displays.

Note: You can only use one option per SAPMON session. If you try to add more than one option, you will be presented with the SAPMON Help screen.

/?

This option shows the SAPMON help screen, displayed below.

SAPMON (C) 1996 GALLAB Ver.1.2

Usage: SAPMON [Switch]

Where Switch can be one of the following:

/? Show this Help

/gXXXX get the Service Type for the SAP Type XXXX (hex)

/fXXXX view only the XXXX SAP Types (hex)

/nXXXXXXXX view only packets sent from network XXXXXXXX (hex)

/mxxxxxxxxxxxx view only packets sent by node XXXXXXXXXXXX (hex)

/oXXXXXXXX view only SAPs originated from network XXXXXXXX (hex)

/sXXXX view only SAPs on socket XXXX (hex)

/hXX view only SAPs XX hops away (decimal)

/a show packets with Source Address and Packet Type information

/tX show packets which are type X, where X can be:

            1 - General Service Query

            2 - General Service Response

            3 - Nearest Service Query

            4 - Nearest Service Response

/gXXXX

This option is a quick reference to show you the service type description that accompanies the four-number hexadecimal digit SAP type in SAPLIST.TXT. The /g option performs a search in the SAPLIST.TXT file and displays that information. For example, if you type:

SAPMON /g0004 <Enter<

you will see the following displayed:

SapType Service Name

--------- -----------------

0004 NetWare File Server / NT Server with FPNW /

        Win95 with File&Prnt share for NW NOVELL - &
        PROVO

You can also refer to Table 1 at the end of this AppNote to see all of the SAP Types and Service Names that are listed in the current SAPLIST.TXT file.

/fXXXX

This option allows you to specify a single SAP type so you will only see the traffic generated by devices using that SAP type. You can type in only one filter per SAPMON command. For example, if you just wanted to see all of the basic NetWare file servers, as well as any Windows NT servers running FPNW (File and Print Services for NetWare), or Windows 95 workstations that have file and print sharing for NetWare turned on, you would type:

SAPMON /f0004 <Enter<

You would see information similar to that shown in Figure 2 displayed on the screen.

Figure 2: Sample output when you start SAPMON with the /f0004 option.

The /fXXXX option automatically adds the packet number (#26 in the example above), the network segment address, and the network board address (such as 0101750:060706B7100) that is in the source field of the packet's IPX header, followed by the type of the SAP Packet that this network/board address sent (for example, a General Service Query or Response). The Source Address is the logical IPX address of the device which sent this SAP packet, as derived from the IPX header. If this is different from the Network Address in the SAP information (which is the address of the device running this service), then this SAP was forwarded by this device.

Without the /fXXXX option, SAPMON might not be able to capture and display all SAPs, depending on the amount of SAP traffic and the speed of your workstation PC. Using this option, you might have a better chance to catch all iterations of the designated SAP.

/nXXXXXXXX

This option lets you filter SAP packets on the source IPX network address that is in the SAP packet, such as 00BABE11. Depending on the kind of router filtering that is in place at your company, you may or may not be able to view the SAP traffic that cannot go past any router fire walls. Use the network addresses that are attached to the network interface boards that you see in the Source field when you choose the /a option.

/mXXXXXXXXXXXX

This option lets you filter on the source IPX node address that is in the SAP packet, such as 0060706A3E11. This allows you to see what SAPs are being sent by a certain node. Use the twelve-digit hexadecimal node addresses that are attached to the network addresses you see in the Source field when you choose the /a option.

/oXXXXXXXX

This option allows you to filter on the network address that is in the SAP records of the SAP packet, such as 00BABE11. Depending on the kind of router filtering that is in place at your company, you may or may not be able to view the SAP traffic that cannot go past any router fire walls. For this option, use the network addresses you see in the Network# column.

/sXXXX

This option lets you specify the socket number of the SAP you want to see displayed, allowing you to see what service is using a particular socket number. For example, if you wanted to view only SAPs that are sent to socket number 0451, you would type:

SAPMON /s0451 <Enter<

In this instance, socket number 0451 is used by NCP (NetWare Core Protocol). You can use the SAPMON utility to help you figure out what socket a server is listening on.

/hXX

This option allows you to filter on how many hops away the SAPs are coming from. As explained before, hops indicate the number of routers between the workstation picking up the SAP information and the particular network address/server/service type displayed in the Server Name, Network# and Service Type columns. The hops option is specified in decimal notation; any number below 10 must have a zero placed before it, such as 03 or 05.

Note: When a server is going down, it will send a SAP packet with the Hops count set to 16. This notifies other devices to remove this server from their SAP tables.

/a

This option shows the actual SAP packets, which can contain up to seven service advertisements per packet (partially displayed in Figure 3).

Figure 3: Sample output when running SAPMON the /a option.

In Figure 3, you can see the packet numbers (#4, 5, and so forth), the network address and network board address (such as 0101750:060706B7100) that is in the source field of the packet's IPX header, followed by the type of SAP packet this network/board address sent (for example, a General Service Response). In this example, the SAP type displayed is 0004. If this example were to go further, you would additional SAP types displayed.

Since this information includes the source address of the device which sent this packet, plus the SAP packet type (general/nearest service query or response), you can use this option if you need to see certain services advertised on your network and you want to know what device is actually responsible for sending these packets.

/tX

The last option allows you to filter on the available packet types. These include:

  1. General Service Query

  2. General Service Response

  3. Nearest Service Query

  4. Nearest Service Response

Use this filter if you are only looking for a particular packet type, such as Nearest Service Query. To do this, you would type:

SAPMON /t3 <Enter<

Then you would only see Nearest Service Queries displayed on the screen.

Specific Uses for SAPMON

Troubleshooting Workstation Connection Problems

The SAPMON utility can be of assistance when a workstation cannot connect to a network server. For example, if a workstation looks like it's communicating with the network but receives the "Unable to connect to a network server" error message, run SAPMON on that workstation, using the /f0004 filter option, to see if it can see any NetWare or NT servers. If the workstation needs to connect to a Novell Directory Services server, use the /f0278 filter option. If the workstation cannot see any such servers on the network, chances are that workstation's communications software did not load properly. If the workstation can see one such server, you can use that to connect to the network.

Analyzing SAP Traffic

You can also use SAPMON to get an idea of how much SAP traffic you have on your network. You will sometimes see that the SAP packets are not filling up with a full seven service advertisements, but display only a few service advertisements per packet. Such activity will generate a lot more packets in order to distribute SAP information, and therefore increase SAP traffic. You can use the /aoption to help identify SAP traffic as well.

If you see lot of unnecessary SAP packets, you might want to implement SAP filtering on your network (see "???" in the July 1992 issue of Novell AppNotes). SAPMON can tell you the origin of the packets in question and identify which device is forwarding them to your network and what services they are advertising. After implementing SAP filtering, you can also use SAPMON to verify that the filtering is working correctly.

Checking for Specific SAP Types

You can use the /fXXXX option to filter on one particular SAP type. For example, suppose you wanted to know whether SAP type 0827 is present on your network. You would use the /f0827 option to be sure that you don't miss seeing it displayed. Using this option is one of the easiest ways to see if a certain SAP type is present on your network.

Redirecting SAPMON's Output to a File

Instead of staring at the screen as the SAPMON information scrolls by, you can redirect the screen output to a file using the DOS redirection method:

SAPMON > filename.ext

When using this redirection, the speed of the monitoring will be slower, which increases the chance of SAPMON missing some SAP packets.

Conclusion

SAPMON is the first of a number of useful NetWare-oriented utilities that we will be covering in the AppNotes over the next few months. The SAP information provided by SAPMON can help you determine what kind of SAP traffic is filling your network bandwidth. It can also help you when troubleshooting problems your workstations may be having connecting to network servers. When SAP packets are required for communication, the SAPMON utility can be great help finding out what's going on and maybe what went wrong. While you can accomplish these tasks using other tools such as protocol analyzers, the SAPMON utility is a fast and handy utility that is easy to use and is at your fingertips when you need it.

Feel free to download the SAPMON utility and distribute it as you see fit. If you have any comments or recommendations, or if you find additional SAP types, send an e-mail to lajos_gal@novell.com.
