Frequently asked questions about:

Software Deployment

Q. Does Cenergy Client Management Suite have to install a package in order to uninstall it?
A. No. Cenergy Client Management Suite can uninstall packages that have been installed via other methods.

Q. Does Tally Systems provide deployment packages? What format are they in? Can we create our own packages?
A. Our software deployment technology does include sample packages. You can also create your own packages using built-in wizards or the package editor. In addition, we fully support MSI packages (either vendor-supplied or ones you've created). Packages are highly compressed, self-contained files which include instructions and settings, scheduling, script commands, and logging rules. MSI packages are also completely customizable prior to being deployed to the client.

Q. Does deployment rely on user access rights?
A. Packages install with the Local System account (which has administrative rights on the local machine) and the user context.

Q. Can software be deployed to groups of computers?
A. You may deploy software to multiple machines at the same time. Within the Cenergy Console you can distribute to either dynamic or static groups based on criteria, or you can utilize Active Directory organizational units. You can also select multiple machines or groups of machines from within TS.Census Asset Inventory if you are using that product for asset tracking.

Q. Are end users allowed to refuse an upgrade, install, or uninstall?
A. Yes. You can build a dialog box into the package that allows an end user to refuse a package. The package delivery process is completely customizable. You could, for example, allow a user to refuse a package a certain number of times before forcing the package execution.

Q. How are interrupted downloads addressed?
A. The Checkpoint/Restart feature handles dropped connections by automatically picking up the download from where it left off.

Q. Where do packages live and how are they made available for distribution?
A. Packages reside on a central server. The agent checks for packages on a regular schedule. Once the agent finds a package marked for deployment to that machine, the download and execution of the package begins. Packages can also be placed in the Download Center, making them available for users at their convenience.

Q. Can I use Cenergy Client Management Suite to install the TS.Census client to all my machines.
A. Yes.

Q. What happens if the client is not connected when a package is deployed?
A. The package will be delivered the next time the client connects.

Q. Is there any coding or scripting needed to build packages?
A. There are several ways to build a package:

  • You can create packages using built-in Deploy Wizards.
  • You can use the package editor to build your own customized packages.
  • You can use a 3rd-party tool to build an MSI package.
  • You can use the MSI package supplied by a vendor
  • You can edit MSI packages with the package editor.

Remote Control

Q. If a user is away from their desk, can you force a remote control session?
A. Yes, the remote control session can access the user's workstation in unattended mode. Unattended mode does not require user approval.

Q. In Live Support, can both the technician and end user share control of the desktop?
A. Yes, both the technician and end user have mouse and keyboard control.

Q. How do Tally Systems remote control capabilities compare to Windows NT capabilities?
A. The remote control capabilities in Cenergy Client Management Suite are web-based and allow you to fix devices from any location with Web access. It provides on-line chat and queuing from a single management point. And it takes full advantage of software deployment, self-healing, and inventory capabilities.

Patch Management

Q. Can patches that require a reboot prompt the logged-in user before a reboot occurs?
A. Yes, you can control reboots to the system. The reboot sequence is completely customizable. You can simply warn the user, apply a count-down time, or allow the user to reboot at another time. You can also force an immediate or future reboot.

Q. What happens if the client is not connected when a patch is deployed?
A. The patch will be delivered the next time the client connects.

Q. How do I know that a patch has been successfully applied?
A. In addition to verifying that a patch has been downloaded and executed, Cenergy Patch Manager verifies and reports that a patch has been successfully applied after a system reboot.
