Novell Technical Support provides this document for the purpose of helping customers during an upgrade to eDirectory 8.6 on NetWare 6. It is important to note that you should use this document in conjunction with the product documentation. This document is a LIVING document and will be updated frequently to keep the most current and up to date information available to all customers.

Pre-upgrade Steps

----------- BACKING UP DIRECTORY SERVICES -----------

Grab a database backup for each server being upgraded. The easiest way to backup the dibs is to do the following:

1. /etc/init.d/ndsd stop
2. tar up your dib directory
3. Make a copy your nds.conf
4. /etc/init.d/ndsd start

TID #10067467 - NICI Migration for UNIX before applying eDirectory 8.6.1

During the upgrade process, the administrator is prompted to upgrade NICI using the NICI Migration Utility. Upgrading to eDirectory 8.6.1 disables the security objects, such as Tree Certificate Authority and Key Material Objects (certificates). To avoid this, use the NICI Migration Utility prior to the upgrade.

TID #10067468 - Running DirXML 1.0 on eDirectory 8.6.1 for UNIX

During the upgrade process, the administrator is prompted to apply a patch to DirXML 1.0. Upgrading to eDirectory 8.6.1 disables DirXML 1.0 functionality unless the DirXML 1.0a Patch is applied.

The following errors are seen when attempting to upgrade to eDirectory 8.6.1 on UNIX.
ERROR: "%% An older version of the product is detected, which cannot be upgraded."
ERROR: "%% Please uninstall all the components and then install this product."

TID10066852 - eDirectory 8.6.1 hangs on Solaris 8 servers

eDirectory 8.6.1 will not install or stops functioning on a Solaris 8 server after the latest Sun cluster has been applied. ndsd appears to hang and does not respond to operations or requests.
