goal
NICI Migration for UNIX before applying eDirectory 8.6.1
fact
NICI 2.3
Novell eDirectory 8.6.1 for Solaris
Novell eDirectory 8.6.1 for Linux
NICI Migration Utility
Upgrading a UNIX host from eDirectory 8.5x to eDirectory 8.6.1
symptom
Upgrading to eDirectory 8.6.1 disables the security objects, such as Tree Certificate Authority and Key Material Objects (certificates).
cause
The NICI configuration files for UNIX hosts need to be converted to the lastest format before migrating to 8.6.1
fix
To avoid having security objects disabled, download the NICI Migration Utility and run it prior to upgrading the UNIX host to eDirectory 8.6.1. The migration steps are outlined below.
SOLARIS MIGRATION TASKS
1) Download and extract the NICI Migration Utility. TID2961224 - NICI Migration Utility (nicimig.tgz)
2) Upgrade the NICI configuration files by running the nici-upgrade script as the root user.
3) You may now install NICI 2.3.
a. Type the Novell eDirectory 8.6.1. nds-install command
b. When nds-install completes, type ndsconfig upgrade
LINUX MIGRATION TASKS
1) Download and extract the NICI Migration Utility. TID2961224 - NICI Migration Utility (nicimig.tgz)
2) Upgrade the NICI configuration files by running the nici-upgrade script as the root user.
3) After running nici-upgrade, you must complete the upgrade on a Windows workstation with NICI 2.x installed. If you do not have a Windows workstation
with NICI 2.x installed, download it from http://download.novell.com/ and install it on a workstation before proceeding.
This procedure assumes that all FTP transfers will be done from the Windows workstation in binary mode and that the Windows FTP client will be logged into the Linux host as root. It is also assumed that you are logged into the Windows workstation as "Administrator." Complete the following tasks in order.
From the Win32 workstation:
4) Find a Windows workstation that has NICI 2.x installed
5) Backup all files and directories in the %SYSTEM%\system32\novell\nici directory
6) Remove all files and directories, except xmgrcfg.wks from the %SYSTEM%\system32\novell\nici directory
7) FTP the linux/primenici.exe to the Windows workstation.
8) FTP the Linux host /var/novell/nici/x* files to the %SYSTEM%\system32\novell\nici directory
9) Execute primenici.exe
10) FTP the %SYSTEM%\system32\novell\nici\Administrator\*.* files to the Linux /var/novell/nici/0 directory
11) FTP the %SYSTEM%\system32\novell\nici\XMGRCFG.NIF file to the Linux /var/novell/nici directory
12) Restore the %SYSTEM%\system32\novell\nici directory on the Windows workstation to it's original state
From the Linux host:
13) Rename /var/novell/nici/XMGRCFG.NIF to /var/novell/nici/xmgrcfg.nif
14) Rename all /var/novell/nici/0 files to their lowercase equivalent
15) You may now install NICI 2.3.
a. Type the Novell eDirectory 8.6.1. nds-install command
b. When nds-install completes, type ndsconfig upgrade
