symptom

Install of eDirectory 8.6.x is slow on NetWare 5.1

Install of Java Virtual Machine, (JVM), 1.2.2 is slow on NetWare 5.1

cause

When installing eDirectory 8.6.x on NetWare 5.1, regardless of the patch level, the install will be slow if some default settings are unchanged.  The same is true for the installation of a new Java Virtual Machine to NetWare 5.1.

fix

There are two changes that will make the greatest improvement:
1.  In MONITOR.NLM|Server Parameters|File caching|Dirty Disk Cache Delay Time should be set to 0.1 Sec.  (default 3.3 seconds)

2.  Load MONITOR.NLM | Server Parameters|Directory caching|Directory Cache Allocation Wait Time should be set to 0.1 sec. (default 2.2 seconds)

note

Other inhibitors are:
Compression - If the files are compressed they must be decompressed before they can be over written.

Virus Software - Each file will be scanned.

Available Purged Space on SYS:\ - If available space is below 20% performance is always affected.
