fact
Novell NetWare 6
Novell eDirectory 8.6 for NetWare 6
iMonitor 1.5
symptom
NetWare 6 servers not being updated in Report Sync Status
NetWare 6 servers are behind in Report Sync Status by several hours
All NON eDirectory 8.6 servers in replica ring show as synched up to time
"All servers synchronized up to time: xx-xx-xxxx 12:57:54 Warning"
NetWare 6 Server showing up as all *********** in DSREPAIR | Report Sync Status
All processed = YES for all partitions
Transitive Vectors are all up to date for each partition
change
eDirectory 8.6 or NetWare 6 installed into the tree
cause
NetWare 6 servers are being updated and everything is synchronized when looking at DSTRACE or looking at Transitive Vectors, but the Partition Status attribute is not being updated.
fix
There are two ways to resolve this problem.
1. Apply Support Pack 1 for NetWare 6 which is available from http://download.novell.com (NW6SP1.EXE)
2. If upgrading eDirectory 8.6 to the latest version is not a valid option, the following is a valid workaround until the server can be updated.
Use iMonitor to change the synchronization method from "by Server" to "by Partition". By default, the "by Server" synchronization method is selected, although if this setting hasn't been touched, the NetWare 6 or eDirectory server is dynamically choosing "by Server" or "by Partition".
The simple algorithm is as follows: If the number of partitions is greater than two times the number of unique servers in the replica rings, then it will sync by Partition. If the number of partitions is less than two times the number of unique servers, then it will sync by Server. This setting can be changed by using iMonitor version 1.5 or higher.
Go to the iMonitor home page on the eDirectory server - the URL is usually http://
Once there, click on the Agent Configuration link on the left and then click Agent Synchronization. Also available on this page, is the setting to change how many threads DS uses to synchronize. The default is 8. The synchronization method selection is at the bottom. Change the setting to "by Partition" and then click SUBMIT. For more information on the differences between the two different synchronization methods, TID #10065779 - The difference between "by Partition" vs "by Server" synchronization.
