symptom

Error  -1697 while setting a Simple Password

Error saving the simple password for user to the directory.

The returned error code is -1,697

cause

Universal password is enabled on the user

fix

You cannot manually set a simple password on a user that has universal password enabled.  To change the simple password, simply change the NDS or Universal password.  Or you can temporarily remove the Universal password setting, but this may cause password synchronization inconsistencies.  See TID 10090319 - How do you enable Universal Password? for more information on how to enable universal password.  For information on how passwords are synchronized with legacy clients, see the Backwards Compatibility page in the NetWare 6.5 Universal Password Deployment Guide on the documentation website.
