Removing a server from the tree is a pretty simple process. There are a couple of things to be aware of when doing this.
There are several objects in the tree that are directly linked to the server object. There are 3 main references you should be aware of.
1) The volume objects are directly tied to the EID of the server (not the server name itself)
2) User's home directories are tied to the volume objects
3) Legacy print queues are tied to the volume objects
If it is coming back into the tree, you must save the references to keep from breaking print queues, home directories etc. that are pointing to that server. See TID #10057553 - Replacing server references using XBrowse utility
If the server is not coming back into the tree, you do not need to use a placeholder to save these references. You will need to do the following however.
If a printer is using a volume on the removed server for its queue, you must reconfigured the queue object so that the queue resides on a new server.
This rule applies to other objects that have a direct link to the server or volume objects. Their services must be pointed to another server to keep them running.
If those services are no longer needed as a result of removing the server, delete the objects.
See the following solutions for more information on actually removing DS and removing the server from the tree.
