goal

Using RCONSOLE with a NetWare 5.X server in Pure IP.

Is there any way to run RCONSOLE from a NetWare5 server without putting IPX/SPX on the wire?

Using RCONAG6.NLM, RCONJ, RCONSOLEJ.

fact

Novell NetWare 5.0

Novell NetWare 6.0

Formerly TID 2941341

fix

On the NW5 server, load RCONAG6.NLM. This will prompt  for a password, a TCP (default is 2034) port and an SPX port (default is 16800).

Syntax:
[LOAD] RCONAG6 [ [-E Epassword] | [password] ] [TCP Port] [SPX Port] [ENCRYPT]

"-E" specify that an encrypted password will be used in the command line. To use the encryption option first verify rconag6 is not loaded by UNLOADING RCONAG6.  Then LOAD RCONAG6 ENCRYPT <YOUR PASSWORD> at the console screen.  The encrypted password is stored in the sys:\system\LDRCONAG.NCF file.   Copy the parameter from the sys:\system\LDRCONAG.NCF file into the autoexec.ncf.

For "TCP Port", -1 disables TCP listening and 0 allows a dynamically assigned port to be used. Like wise for "SPX Port".

RConsoleJ can be launched using one of the following methods:

1. ConsoleOne -> select server object -> Tools -> Remote Console
2. NWADMN32 -> Tools -> Pure IP Remote Console
3. SYS:PUBLIC\MGMT\ConsoleOne\1.2\RCONJ.EXE
4. RCONJ.NCF from the server console

A Java RConsoleJ will appear in which it is necessary to key in the host name (if DNS is configured in this network) or the IP address of the server, with the TCP port number and password. Once the information is keyed in, click on the "Connect" button.

For more information on RConsoleJ, refer to TID 2942080

It is possible to connect to another server through an RConsoleJ proxy server from the "Advanced" button. For more information on RCONPRXY.NLM (RConsoleJ proxy server), you can refer to TID 2942078 (What is RCONPRXY.NLM in NetWare 5 ?)

Alternatively,  run CONMAN.EXE from SYS:PUBLIC\MGMT directory.

A Java Novell Server Console Manager will appear in which it is necessary to key in the host name (if DNS is configured in the network) or the IP address of the server, with the TCP port number and password. Once the information is keyed in, click on the "Connect" button.

The server will report that the connect is granted.

A screen of buttons showing all the available screens on your server is seen. To view any screen, just click on the button.

If a new screen is loaded on the server, it is then necessary to click on the "Refresh" button to show up more icons of the available screens on the server.

To end the Java RCONSOLE, just close the screen and the server will report the connection is cleared.
