Java patch to address an installation hang issue when installing NetWare 6.5 on a VMWare ESX box.
NetWare 6.5 and VMware ESX Server Installation Instructions
1. Install VMware ESX Server 2.0.1 product.
2. Download the JAVAFIX zip file to your management workstation.
3. Unzip the JAVAFIX file to a temp directory. This gives you a CD
image file named JAVA_FIX.ISO and a file named floppy.zip.
4. Copy the .iso file to a temporary directory on the service console
of the ESX Server machine. (Or you may burn this JAVA_FIX.ISO to a
CD. However, it is simpler to copy the .iso file to the ESX Server
machine.)
5. Unzip the file floppy.zip to the root of a floppy disk.
6. Create a VMware virtual machine.
7. If you copied the file JAVA_FIX.ISO to your ESX Server machine, add
an extra CD-ROM device to the virtual machine and connect it to
JAVA_FIX.ISO. Configure this extra CD-ROM drive so it does NOT
start connected. You do not need an extra physical CD-ROM.
NetWare 6.5 Installation Instructions
1. Prepare for NetWare 6.5 installation.
a. Insert the NetWare 6.5 Operating System CD in the CD-ROM drive.
b. Power on the VMware virtual machine.
2. Boot from the NetWare 6.5 OS CD.
a. Press <I> to install the new server.
b. Insert the floppy disk into the floppy drive.
c. If you are installing in a VMware virtual machine, connect the floppy
disk. If you are using the JAVA_FIX.ISO image file, also connect the
extra CD-ROM device (which is attached to JAVA_FIX.ISO) to the
virtual machine.
d. Follow the installation instructions. When you are prompted to insert
the JAVA_FIX CD in the CD-ROM drive,
i. If you are using the JAVA_FIX.ISO image file, just press <Enter>.
ii. If you burned JAVA_FIX.ISO to a physical CD, remove the NetWare 6.5
OS CD from the CD-ROM drive and insert the JAVA_FIX CD.
Press <Enter>.
e. Once the correct java.zip file is copied to the server, the
installation prompts you to insert the NetWare 6.5 OS CD.
i. If you are using the JAVA_FIX.ISO image file, at that point just
press <Enter>.
ii. If you are using the physical JAVA_FIX CD, remove the JAVA_FIX CD
from the CD-ROM drive and insert the NetWare 6.5 OS CD.
f. Remove the floppy disk from the floppy drive.
g. The Java file has been copied to the system and you may disconnect
the extra CD-ROM device. You must keep the floppy drive connected,
as you need it when you install the server license.
Post NetWare 6.5 Installation Instructions for JAVA_FIX
1. Mount the JAVA_FIX CD as a NetWare volume on the NetWare 6.5 Server.
a. Insert the JAVA_FIX CD in the CDROM drive or copy the JAVA_FIX.ISO image
to the your management workstation.
b. Connect the CDROM device to the CDROM Drive or to the JAVA_FIX.ISO.
c. Type CDROM and press <Enter> at the console.
2. Install the new Java.zip file.
a. Type NWCONFIG and press <Enter> at the server console.
b. Select Product Options and press <Enter>.
c. Select Install a product not listed and press <Enter>.
d. Press <F3> to change the default path.
e. Delete any path information that is listed and type JAVA_FIX:
and press <Enter>.
f. Press <Enter> at the "Mount the JAVA_FIX CD" to start the file copy.
g. Press <Enter> at the "Finished installing the JAVAFIX.zip"
and exit NWCONFIG.
h. Reboot the NetWare 6.5 server after the installation has completed.
Symptoms: During the last file copy phase of the GUI installation, the installation hangs. At this time, the file copy progress bar will not advance further. Another indication: at this point, if you switch from the System Console and back to the GUI install, the screen will not redraw itself correctly.
Cause: Under rare conditions, the JVM within NetWare 6.5 might deadlock and cause the installation to hang.
This was discovered while installing NetWare 6.5 on a VMware ESX, v 2.0.1 virtual machine.
