Why can't I send mail with Evolution?

(Last modified: 10JUN2003)

issue

I am getting the error message "SMTP server mail.xxx.net does not support requested authentication type PLAIN". I can receive mail just fine but tried all the options under the sending mail tab and can not get it to work.

fix

This can occur if Server requires authentication is checked for a particular account, but it is not required by the SMTP server used by that account. Although many users assume that they need to login in order to send mail, most likely your server does not support authentication.

To check this setting follow these directions for each account.

For Evolution 1.2 and earlier:

Go to a mail view and select Tools > Mail Settings. Click on the account that you want to edit (this must be done on a per-account basis, because SMTP servers may vary between accounts), and click on [Edit]. In the account editor click on the Sending Mail tab. Click the [Check for supported types] button in the Authentication section. Choose the Authentication type:. If your SMTP server supports any authentication the menu will limit you only to the options that the server supports. If nothing is supported, it will gray out the choices on the menu. If all the items are greyed out, uncheck the box labeled Server requires authentication.

For Evolution 1.3 and later:

Select the Tools -> Settings menu item to open the settings dialog. Click the Mail Accounts button. Select the account that you want to edit and click the [Edit] button. In the account editor click on the Sending Mail tab. Click the [Check for supported types] button in the Authentication section. Select an item from the Authentication type: selector. If your SMTP server supports any authentication the menu will limit you only to the options that the server supports. If nothing is supported, it will gray out the choices on the menu. If all the items are greyed out, uncheck the box labeled Server requires authentication.
