fact

Novell iPrint

symptom

iPrint printers pushed through ZENworks workstation policy don't install.

ShortInstallName feature causes ZENworks pushed iPrint printers to not install.

note

In the Properties of the Workstation Package, Policy Schedule tab, the first option is "Policy schedule type".  That should be set to Event.

The next option is "Run this policy when the following event happens:"  The options relevant to installing iPrint printers are:
System Startup
User Login
User Desktop is Active

cause

System Startup is not supported with iPrint.  iPrint requires the user environment to be present to install printers.  When running the system startup mode, the user environment is not present.

fix

Select User Login or User Desktop is Active as the event when configuring iPrint printers to be installed using ZENworks workstation policies.

note

The ShortInstallName feature is enabled in sys:\Apache2\htdocs\ippdocs\iprint.ini.  Change ShortInstallName = DEFAULT  to ShortInstallName = [WhateverName].   This will require the printer to be re-installed to the workstation.  Instead of the name in the Windows Printers folder displaying like:

[pa_name] on [ipp://IPorDNS]

The name will display as:

[pa_name] on [WhateverName]

This can shorten the length of the printer name a lot, especially if a DNS name is being used.
