symptom

Unable to login to NetWare Remote Manager over port 8009

Internet Explorer states "The requested url could not be retrieved"

fact

Novell NetWare 6.5

Novell NetWare 5.1

change

Internet Explorer was configured to use a Proxy server

cause

Proxy server was not configured to allow traffic over port 8009

fix

Disable proxy setting on Internet Explorer or configure Proxy server to allow traffic to port 8009

note

Troubleshooting steps:

1.  Verified SSL certificates were valid, by testing SSL certificate with Secure LDAP export. See How to test LDAP over SSL  - TID10066259
2.  TCPCON - verified port 8009 was listening
3.  Telnet to port 8009 - Open a command prompt and type:  telnet 137.65.215.51 8009 -
If the port is not listening, a message should be returned "Could not open connection to the host, on port XXXX:  Connect Failed"
If the port is listening, the command prompt should go blank, as if it is attempting to connect.
4.  If a NetWare 6/6.5 is available, get to the server GUI by typing STARTX at the Server console. In the NetWare GUI, select Novell | Utilities | NetWare Remote Manager.
In this case, we were able to get to NetWare Remote Manager on port 8009 at the Server GUI, which we were unable to via Internet Explorer web browser.
5.  Disable/bypass any proxy settings being used in the Web browser.
