symptom

Running a CHKDSK /F on the DOS partition of a server causes corruption

Before doing an Inplace Upgrade on a NetWare 6 server, a CHKDSK /F was run on the DOS partition to see if there were any bad blocks prior to upgrading to NetWare 6.5 using the overlay CD.  It would always find crosslinked files that after being fixed, rendered the partition unusable.

cause

An image was used to generate the C: drive on the servers in question.  Upon further investigation, it was found that any server created using that image had the problem.  Any server that was installed using the CD, was fine.

fix

Install the DOS partition for the server fresh instead of using a corrupted image.
