File cannot be removed error when installing support pack for NetWare

Novell Netware 6.5

Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 1

Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 2

Novell NetWare 5.1

Novell NetWare 6.0

File or directory "SYS:\TOMCAT\4\WEBAPPS\NPS\WEB-INF\LIB\XERCES.JAR" cannot be removed. Error:  error code 142 (8E hex).  (ICMD-5.0-13)

After pressing ESC on above error, the SP1 installation gets aborted without a chance to retry the failed file operation.

This seems to only happen if the server was upgraded to Nw6.5 and not a new install.  It also happens only if the SYS volume is a traditional volume and has file compression set to On.

The java process started by the SP1 install itself to update the iManager plugins doesn't complete, and locks XERCES.JAR and several other files.

The cause of this is file compression / decompression.  It is suggested that the SYS volume not be compressed at all but if it needs to be, make sure that the entire Tomcat directory is not compressed.  This seems to only happen on traditional volumes so another suggestion is to upgrade your traditional SYS volume to NSS

Currently, there's one known workaround: Rerun the SP1 install, and at the stage when nwconfig says "Extracting", switch to the system console of the server, and enter "java -exit". This will stop the offending Java process. Switch back to the nwconfig screen, and verify that after a few minutes, the SP1 installation continues properly. Once this is complete, and the server has been fully restarted, install SP1 once more to make sure that the iManager plugins get updated properly. The SP1 installation should complete without error this time.
