fact

Novell Client 4.8.3 for Windows NT/2000

Microsoft Windows Active Directory

symptom

The trust relationship between the workstation and the Primary domain has failed

Workstations are falling out of the domain. When a user attempts to login, they get "The trust relationship between the workstation and the Primary domain has failed"

cause

The workstations and domain communicate randomly every 30 days to change the workstation account password. This workstation uses Kerberos to communicate with the server during the password changes, and since Kerberos fails, the workstation is unable to remain registered with the domain.

fix

This is a known defect and has been reported to engineering and should be fixed in the next client release.

WORKAROUND: Use the MSGINA and the workstations will not fall out of the domain.  However, this configuration is not fully supported and almost all enhancements of the Novell client like NDPS, Zenworks for Desktops and so on are lost.

To change to MSGINA from NWGINA edit the following registry key:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GinaDLL

VALUES: NWGINA.DLL or MSGINA.DLL

Troubleshooting -

Take a Windows 2000 Professional workstation without the Novell client and run NetDiag (a Windows Resource Kit utility from Microsoft) to test the Kerberos and everything passes.   Run "Klist tickets" and the workstation share (computername$) ticket with the workstation name are listed.

Now install Novell client v4.83 on the same Windows 2000 Professional workstation and run NetDiag to test the Kerberos and the Kerberos test fails.  Run "Klist tickets" and the ticket for the workstation is not listed.
