symptom

NAL/MSI installation error:  "Problem: Install failed. MSI returned error code: 1604"

Application Explorer error: "Problem: Install failed. MSI returned error code: 1604"

Error occurs when doing an install of Office 2000 Using MSI app object.  

1604 Error occurs on Windows 95 and Windows 98 machines

Application Explorer error: Problem: Install failed.  MSI retured error code: 1603

1603 error occurs on Windows NT 4.0 machines.

This happens with either zfd3sp1a or zfd3nal5.exe files installed.  

It does not happen with ZFD3sp1 or with zfd3pt3a.  

It also does not occur when manually running msiexec.

This error has also been found on NT 4.0 SP6a workstations.  

The problem occurs using the latest ZFD 3.0 SP1a code and ZFD 3.2.

The local Administrator account was able to install Office 2k successfully.

Steps to Dup:

- Setup a system with ZFD3sp1, zfd3pt3a and zfd3nal5 installed,  a system with zfd3sp1a will also work.   Can also test with ZFD 3.2
- Create a basic MSI app from the Office 2000 CD
- Push out the app
- With NAL or NALEXPLD from a win9x or NT machine, run the install.

You should see the error message at the very end of the install.

NOTE:  The files are all copied down during the install.  After getting the error and rebooting, the files and shortcuts will be removed.

cause

A flag for shutdown within the NAL code was not being flagged correctly.

fix

Fixed in ZENAPP32.DLL dated 12/14/2001 or newer.
