Novell NetWare 4.11

Novell NetWare 4.2

Novell eDirectory 8.6 for NetWare 6

symptom

Cannot browse the tree during a NetWare 6 new install

Master of the Root partition resides on NetWare 4.x servers only

NetWare 6 server is the first server in a pure NetWare 4.x tree

IPX information and frame type is specified correctly on the NetWare 6 server

During the GUI portion of the DS install, the tree shows up when the browse button is clicked, but no containers below the tree are visible.

cause

This is a known issue with IPX and is referenced in the NetWare 6 Readme.

fix

As stated in the NetWare 6 Readme www.novell.com/documentation/lg/nw6p/index.html:

Installing into a NetWare 4 Tree

When installing a NetWare 6 server into a pure NetWare 4 tree, clicking the Browse button on the eDirectory installation screen to search for a context will not return a list of available containers. You must type the context where you want to install the NetWare 6 server into the tree.

If you really want to browse the tree, make sure a NetWare 5.x server holds a copy of the partitions you want to browse.
