cause

Some network printing devices (JetDirect devices, etc), notably those with older firmware, will not work with the ipp protocol.  For these, use the NOVELL LPR GATEWAY.  

fix

Steps to create a printer using the iManage utility.
1. Within iManage, click on "iPrint Management," and then on "Create Printer."  

2. Enter the printer name, browse to and select the desired context, browse to and select the NDPS Manager.  

3. Click the down arrow and select the Novell LPR gateway.  At this time, no 3rd party vendors have developed gateways for use in iManager.  To use a 3rd party gateway, use NWAdmin32 to create the printer agent.    

4.  Enter the IP address of the printer and the LPR printer name.  The default setting is "PASSTHROUGH".  THIS MAY NOT WORK FOR ALL PRINTERS.  This step is very important.  If the wrong LPR name is used, the printer and server will not be able to communicate and "Not Bound" errors will be seen.

PLEASE CHECK WITH THE PRINTER MANUFACTURER TO FIND OUT THE CORRECT LPR NAME.

5. Select the appropriate printer drivers for the various OS platforms.

There are no iManager-SnapINs available for other printer gateways than Novell SNMP Gateway, if other GW are wanted/needed, the administration of NDPS/iPrint needs to be done by NWADMIN which still allows for the configuration of other Gateways (Xerox, Canon, HP, Lexmark, etc.)

However, after careful testing and evaluation, HP believes that the Novell SNMP Printer Gateway (Novell Gateway) is the preferred solution for enabling printing on Novell networks. Therefore, the HP Gateway product will be discontinued on January 1, 2005.
