goal

Backup/Restore issues for NetWare 6 to be fixed in Support Pack 1

fact

Novell NetWare 6.0

NetWare 6 Storage Management Services (SMS)

The following issues have been identified as not solved in the patch release.  Status will be announced when appropriate.  Also some issues identify upgrades needed from 3rd party backup engines.  This TID will expire when these issues are resolved.

symptom

Problems with NFS file system support on Unix namespace stored on NetWare 6 NSS volumes.

note

NFS

1.Restoring files with no rights.
        Files with no rights ( - - - - - - - ) get restored with default rights ( - r w - r - - r - - ) and the user ID is the same as the group ID.
   Restoring directories with no rights
        Directories with no rights ( d - - - - - - ) get restored with default rights
        ( d r w - r - - r - - ) and the user ID is the same as the group ID.
Hard links are not supported by NSS in NetWare 6.
Hard links in NFS data can no longer be restored to an NSS volume.  Older versions of Unix used hard links to create locks.  Programs using hard links for synchronizing data will fail after a restore.  During the restore of an NSS volume the namespace loses the "Number of Links" on the directories.  The number of links is always 1 and should be 1, 2, or 3 depending on the file/directory.

2. Problem with NFS file system support on Unix namespace stored on NetWare traditional volumes.
Hard links in a NetWare Traditional File System volume cannot be restored to a directory that does not exist on the volume.  That is, if the hard link has to be created in a directory that is different from the parent directory (where the file was originally located), the directory for the hard link should exist on the volume before the hard link can be created.  This is unlike a normal restore operation wherein a new directory is created whenever the restore directory is different from the parent directory.

NSS

1. Cannot backup and restore sparse files greater than 2 gigabytes on NSS volumes.
Sparse files in size over 2 gigabytes cannot backup and restore on NSS volumes.

2.  Mac filenames which have an extended character cannot be copied onto an NSS volume.
A filename on the MAC which has the character ~ (tilde) over the letter n cannot be copied onto an NSS volume.  After changing the filename, the file copies correctly.  This extended character can be created on the MAC by pressing the option key and the n key at the same time followed by pressing the n key again.

Backup Exec 8.5

1. Backup Exec requires upgrade for use on NetWare 6.
Customers who wish to use Backup Exec for NetWare on
NetWare 6 must download an updated release of Backup Exec for NetWare v8.5
from the VERITAS web site. Backup Exec for NetWare v8.5EA is available
through <http://preview.veritas.com>. Previous versions of Backup Exec for
NetWare will not operate on NetWare 6.

2.  Backup Exec 8.5 gives error not enough memory to run.
With default nss /cachebalance=60, Backup Exec gives error not enough memory to run. Backup Exec needs min. 20% cache boundaries to run. Backup Exec will sometimes run if changing nss /cachebalance to at least 55%, but will always run if nss /cachebalance to 50% or less.  If the server has more memory, or fewer nlms running, this problem probably will never appear.  This problem has been corrected in an updated version of Backup Exec for NetWare version 8.5 which was tested on NetWare 6. Customers should download the Backup Exec for NetWare v8.5EA from <http://preview.veritas.com>.  The updated version will still display a warning in the upgrade screen, but will continue past the memory check if at least 15 Mb of memory is available.

3. On NetWare 6 Backup Exec gives error MAC namespace not supported on SYS.
When installing Backup Exec 8.5 on NetWare 6 server, it gives an error that the MAC namespace is not supported on the SYS volume. The SYS volume is NSS, which does have MAC namespace support by default and does not need user interaction to enable MAC namespace support. Getting this message will have no effect on Backup Exec operation. However, the installer will be unable to copy the installation files for the Backup Exec Workstation Agent for Macintosh to the server. If the Backup Exec Workstation Agent for Macintosh is needed, it must be installed directly from the Backup Exec for NetWare CD.

ARCserve 7

1 . ARCserve 7 PFC.INI has to be updated to run on NetWare 6
ARCserve 7 will only run on NetWare 6 server if PFC.INI file is updated to be compatible. In PFC.INI file, the following modifications need to be changed. Server version was 500 and now is 560, and the tsa was TSA500.NLM and now is TSA600.NLM.
