symptom

Cannot restore file 00000000.$HW using NWCONFIG

Error:  "File "SYS:\SYSTEM\$HWNDS.BAK\00000000.$HW" cannot be opened."

Error: "error code 128 (80 hex)"

Error:  "nwconfig-5-235"

change

Trying to restore local NDS information after hardware upgrade

cause

The $HWNDS.BAK directory was saved directly under SYS:\SYSTEM.  Because SYS:\SYSTEM is the default directory for creating the backup directory, it will not restore from this directory.

fix

When you choose "Save local NDS information before hardware upgrade" in NWCONFIG, it will create a directory under SYS:\SYSTEM called $HWNDS.BAK.  The backup file, 00000000.$HW, will be placed in this directory.  NWCONFIG will then ask where to copy this file to.  If you are upgrading the hard drive, you will choose another server or workstation.  You will then complete the upgrade and restore data.  Then, in NWCONFIG on the new server hardware, you will choose "Restore local NDS information after hardware upgrade."  It will ask you where to restore from.  Because SYS:\SYSTEM is the default directory for creating the backup directory, it will not restore from this directory.  To resolve this problem, move the $HWNDS.BAK directory (and 00000000.$HW file inside) to path other than SYS:\SYSTEM\$HWNDS.BAK\ such as SYS:$HWNDS.BAK\.   When NWCONFIG asks where to restore from, you would type for this example "SYS:\".  The restore should complete without the error.
