goal
Creating Filter Exception for PCAnywhere
fact
Bordermanager 2.1
BorderManager 3.0
Novell BorderManager 3.5
PCAnywhere v 8
PCAnywhere v 9.0
symptom
Customer was unable to connect from a remote PCAnywhere to a internal PCAnywhere workstation with static NAT enabled on the BorderManager server.
Default filters where loaded.
With filters unloaded the connection worked.
cause
PCAnywhere uses two ports. PCAnywhere uses port 5631 for tcp and 5632 for udp. The ports are blocked by the default filters put in place by BorderManager. Four filter exceptions must be created to allow PCAnywhere to work.
fix
1.) PCAnywhere Request tcp
Source Interface Type: Interface (Leave this at its default of "Interface")
Source Interface: All Interfaces (This is the default)
Destination Interface Type: Interface (Leave this at its default of "Interface")
Destination Interface: public (press "enter" and select the Public interface name of your public network card)
Packet Information: Packet Type: (press "enter" where is says "any")
(Now press "insert", which puts you in "Define TCP/IP Packet Type" area then do the following)
Name: PCAnywhere 5631 out (This is just a name we are giving this "Packet Type".)
Protocol: TCP (Press "insert" to get the option list and then select TCP.)
Source Port(s): 5631 (These are the response high ports used during responses.)
Destination Port(s): ALL (This is the destination port that the workstation is contacting.)
Comment: (You can put any comment in here that you want.)
(After putting in the above information, press "ESC" or "Escape" and it will save this Packet Type definition.)
(Now select the Packet Type that you just created and press "enter", this will add it to the Exception)
-- The following is how it should now look--
Packet Information:
Packet Type: Pcany 5631 out Protocol: TCP
Destination Port(s): ALL
Source Port(s):5631
Source Address Type: Host
Source TCP/IP Address: 10.0.0.5 (This is the private TCP/ IP address of your Internal PCAnywhere host)
Destination Address Type: Any Address
2.) PCAnywhere Response tcp
Source Interface Type: Interface (Leave this at its default of "Interface")
Source Interface: public (press "enter" and select the Public interface name of your public network card)
Destination Interface Type: Interface (Leave this at its default of "Interface")
Destination Interface: All Interfaces (This is the default)
Packet Information: Packet Type: (press "enter" where is says "any")
(Now press "insert", which puts you in "Define TCP/IP Packet Type" area then do the following)

Destination Port(s): 5631 (These are the destination high ports the workstation is using in response.)
Comment: (You can put any comment in here that you want.)
(After putting in the above information, press "ESC" or "Escape" and it will save this Packet Type definition.)
(Now select the Packet Type that you just created and press "enter", this will add it to the Exception)

Source Port(s): ALL
Source Address Type: Any Address
Destination Address Type: Host
Destination TCP/IP Address: 10.0.0.5 (This is the private TCP/ IP address of your Internal PCAnywhere host)
3.) PCAnywhere Request UDP
Source Interface Type: Interface (Leave this at its default of "Interface")
Source Interface: All Interfaces (This is the default)
Destination Interface Type: Interface (Leave this at its default of "Interface")
Destination Interface: public (press "enter" and select the Public interface name of your public network card)
Packet Information: Packet Type: (press "enter" where is says "any")
(Now press "insert", which puts you in "Define TCP/IP Packet Type" area then do the following)
Name: Pcany 5632 out (This is just a name we are giving this "Packet Type".)

Source Port(s): 5632 (These are the response high ports used during responses.)
NOTE: Older version of PCAnywhere relied on UDP and UDP port 22 may also be required instead of UDP port 5632.
