goal

What is the McAfee Virus scan "File Copy Utility" and where does it run from?

fact

Novell ZENworks for Desktops 2

Network Associates NT 4.03 Virus Scan Utility

NAI NT User Manuel Documentation.

cause

In the online documentation on pg. 146 it talks about needing to install the "File Copy Utility" on NT workstations in the Custom Installation options if you are using a Novell Server.  On pg. 156 it talks more about what this Utility is for but it does not tell you very detailed information.

fix

The "File Copy Utility" is used to copy new .DAT or upgrade files from the Server.  It is run from the Registry on boot up.  The Key is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
The FcpEXE key shows the path and executable (FCP.EXE) that will start each time the computer is booted up.  FCP.EXE runs from:
C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan NT\fcp.exe

This program works in conjunction with the Automatic Update/Upgrade Utility.  If you go into the VirusScan NT AntiVirus Console and click on the Automatic Update/Upgrade Properties Icon, it shows the Path to the Server on the Update Options tab and the Upgrade Options tab, that the File Copy Utility will look in for the updated virus scan files. By changing the Path here, the FCP.EXE will copy files from wherever you specify on the Server to the Temp directory: C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan NT\Temp.  Then during the scheduled updates the Virus scanner will copy the new files from the local NAI Temp directory.
