fact

Novell NetWare 5.0

Formerly TID 2942527

Novell DHCP 3.0

symptom

DHCP 3.0 Server not responding to BOOTP requests.

BOOTP Clients not getting IP address from DHCP Server.

fact

With IP Manually configured the bootp client can ping the DHCP server

cause

If the client doesn't have connectivity to the DHCP server, the server will not see the BOOTP request and therefore will not respond to it.

Since the BOOTP request is a broadcast packet, the routers must be configured to forward these specific requests on to the server.

The subnet range can be configured to respond to only DHCP requests, only BOOTP requests, both DHCP and BOOTP, or set to exclude the range. If BOOTP is not selected in the configuration the server will ignore the BOOTP requests.

fix

Make sure DHCP is configured as "Dynamic BOOTP and DHCP" when configuring subnet range.
Make sure all routers between DHCP server and BOOTP client have BOOTPFWD or IPHELPER running per the manufacturers instructions.
