Installing JetAdmin and JetPrint - step by step instructions
1. Login to the network as supervisor
2. Insert the Novell NetWare Administration and Printing Utilities into the floppy
3. Type a:install and follow the instructions in the install program
a. Installing the program to the server's public directory allows the utilities to be accessible from any workstation at any time.
4. To install JetAdmin in Windows, just execute JETADMIN.EXE from the run option in the file menu in program manager. That process will create a group (HP JetDirect) and will create a HP JetAdmin icon in the newly created group the first time JetAdmin is run.
5. Running JETPRINT.EXE from the run option under the file menu will also create a HP JetPrint icon and a JetPrint Overview document in the HP JetDirect group the first time it is run.
6. The latest version of JetAdmin (version A.01.11 as of 9/26/95) supports Directory Services
NetWare 3.x Queue Server Mode
1. Login to the server as supervisor from any workstation
2. Run JetAdmin
3. Select the printer you want to configure from the list of available printers. Only those printers with JetDirect cards installed should appear on this
list. If your printer does not appear on the list, try hitting the Refresh! option on the menu bar. If you still have problems, check the filtering options to make sure there is no filtering enabled.
4. Select the Configuration... button.
Note: If the card has previously been configured to another server where you currently do not have a supervisor/admin connection, you will not be allowed to configure the card.
5. In the Operating Mode: box, choose Queue Server.
6. In the Queue Server Settings: box, enter the name you want the JetDirect device to be called in the Print Server (Printer Name): field.
Note: This will be the name of the associated print server created at the server.
7. Select Add Queue... from Selected Bindery Print Queues:
8. From the Available Print Queues list, select the desired queue or click Create to make a new queue on the server.
9. If needed, choose Yes to add the newly created queue to the printer's service list.
10. Press Close.
11. Ignore NDS Tree name and Print Server NDS Context fields. (These fields will only be seen if the version of JetAdmin is A.01.11 or later).
12. Optional - Type a description of the queue in the Description: box.
13. To test the queue, select the Test Page button to print a test page.
14. Click OK to exit the Printer I/O Configuration Screen.
15. Select Exit to quit JetAdmin.
NetWare 3.x Remote Printer Mode
1. Run PCONSOLE
2. Create a print queue
3. Create a print server
4. Configure print server printer to be Type Remote, Other Unknown
5. Assign a print queue to the printer
6. Restart your print server
7. Run JetAdmin
8. Select the printer you want to configure
9. Press the Configuration... button
10. Choose the Remote printer option in the Operating Mode: box
11. Enter a name for the printer in the Printer Name Option
12. Select the Print Server Name from the pull down list. This list will contain all the running print servers.
13. Select the logical printer number previously defined as Type Remote, Other Unknown.
14. Optional: Type a description in the Description: box
15. Click OK to exit Printer I/O Configuration
16. Select Exit to quit JetAdmin
NetWare 4.x Bindery Queue Server Mode
1. Determine the bindery context by using the SERVMAN console utility or the console SET command. Change the context if necessary.
Note: JetDirect network boards manufactured before late 1992 use unencrypted passwords that NetWare 2.12 and later versions don't allow by default. These boards generate messages at the server console unless you type SET ALLOW UNENCRYPTED PASSWORDS=ON at the server console. You can place this command in the AUTOEXEC.NCF file.
2. Log in to the network from a workstation as supervisor.
3. Run JETADMIN. (These instructions assume you are running JETADMIN from Windows. See the HP JetDirect Network Interface Configuration Guide for complete details on JETADMIN.)
4. Select the printer you want to configure from the list box.
5. Select Configuration... The Printer I/O Configuration screen appears.
6. Choose Queue Server
7. Enter the print server's name in the Printer Name (Queue Server) field.
8. Select Add Queue. The Available Print Queues list appears.
9. Select a print queue from the list, or create a new queue, and click on Close. The Printer I/O Configuration screen appears.
10. Type a description of the queue in the description field. The description will be available to users through JETPRINT.
11. Select Test Page to print a test page.
12. Click Close to exit the Printer I/O Configuration screen.
13. Select Exit to exit JETADMIN.
NetWare 4.x Bindery Remote Printer Mode
1. Determine the bindery context by using the SERVMAN console utility or the console SET command. The bindery context appears. Use the same context in Step 3.
2. At a DOS workstation, log in to the same NetWare server used in Step 1 as user ADMIN and run PCONSOLE. For example, if you used NetWare server SALES in Step 1, you would type LOGIN SALES/ADMIN; then execute PCONSOLE. Remain in Directory Services mode.
3. Make sure that the current context displayed at the top of the screen is the same as the bindery context in Step 1. If it is not the same, choose "Change Context" and press <Insert> to browse for that bindery context.
4. Choose "Quick Setup." The Print Services Quick Setup screen appears. Change the printer and print queue names (and print server name, if you are creating one) as desired.
Follow the information and key lines at the bottom of the screen. Press <F1> for context-sensitive information. For more information on using Quick Setup, see "Quick Path for Setting Up Printing" in Chapter 3 of the Print Services manual.
5. Choose a volume on the same NetWare server used in Step 1. To browse for a volume, highlight the "Print queue volume" field and press <Enter>; then press <Insert>. Choose a volume with sufficient disk space to temporarily store users' print jobs.
6. Configure the printer as type Other/Unknown. Choose "Other/Unknown" from the "Printer type" field.
7. Press <F10> to save changes. PCONSOLE saves the configuration and automatically assigns the printer to the print queue and the print server to the printer.
8. Press <Esc> to exit PCONSOLE.
9. Reboot the print server.
10. Run JETADMIN. (These instructions assume you are running JETADMIN from Windows. See the HP JetDirect Network Interface Configuration Guide for complete details on JETADMIN.)
11. Select the printer you want to configure.
12. Select "Configuration." The Printer I/O Configuration screen appears.
13. Choose "Remote Printer."
14. Enter a name for the printer in the "Printer Name" field.
15. Select the print server's name, or enter a new name in the "Print Server" field.
16. Select the printer number assigned in PCONSOLE.
17. Type a description in the description field. This description will be available to Windows users in the JETPRINT utility.
18. Click OK to exit the Printer I/O Configuration screen..
19. Select Exit to exit JETADMIN.
NetWare 4.1 NDS Queue Server Mode
In NWAdmin
Note: The following steps are used to setup a regular printing environment using NWAdmin. The quick setup option in PCONSOLE would work as well. There is nothing unique about setting up a printing environment for a NDS aware JetDirect card in NetWare 4.x environment as far as NetWare is concerned.
1. Login to the network as Admin or an Admin equivalent
2. Start NWAdmin
3. Left click on the container object where you want to install the printing environment.
4. Select object from the menu bar
5. Select create
6. Select Print Queue from the list of available NDS Objects
7. Enter the name you want to call the print queue
8. Specify the volume where you want to place the queues directory
9. Click on the box to define additional properties
10. Select Create
11. Enter any additional information-your office location, department, etc.
12. Add any Users or Operators as desired
13. If you made any changes press OK, otherwise press cancel.
14. Select object from the menu bar
15. Select create
16. Select Printer from the list of objects
17. Define the printer name and click define additional properties.
18. Select create
19. Click on the assignments tab
20. Select Add... to add a queue
21. Add the newly created queue to the queue list
22. Define any other options desired for the printer and then click OK
23. Select object from the menu bar
24. Select create
25. Select Print Server from the list of objects
26. Enter the desired name of the print server and click the box to define additional properties
27. Click OK
28. Click on assignments
29. Add the newly created printer to the printers list.
30. Define any other options desired and then click OK.
31. You can verify the setup by looking at the details of the print queue created and checking the assignments tab. Both a printer and a print server should be defined. Another way to verify the setup is to look at the print layout of the container the objects reside in. There should be a line connecting the print server to the printer and print queue.
In JetAdmin
1. Logged in as Admin or an Admin equivalent, start JetAdmin
2. Select the printer you want to configure
3. Press the configuration... button
4. In the Operating Mode: box select Queue Server
5. In the Queue Server Settings: box enter the name of the previously created print server, the name of the NDS tree (from the dropdown list), and the context in which the print server is located.
6. Do not select a Bindery Print queue in the Selected Bindery Print Queues: box. Doing so will cause the JetDirect card to make a bindery connection as well as a NDS connection to the server (using two licensed connections).
7. Optional: Enter a description for the printer if desired.
8. Click OK
9. Hit the Status button to verify that the print server and file server get connected correctly.
