fact

Novell GroupWise 5.2

Addressing Rules

symptom

detected error on smtp command

error: 550 host unknown

fact

Error occurs when address is entered in personal address book

Message undeliverable after first time

cause

The default addressing rules in the NWSB release of GroupWise
does not have an addressing rule that excludes the gateway.

For example, a piece of mail is sent to johndoe@abc.com. On the
first attempt the mail is processed fine by the gateway. The
next time the same user sends a piece of mail to johndoe@abc.com
the frequent contacts address book is used and completes the
name. The address associated with John Doe is

GWIA:johndoe@abc.com.

The addressing rules are used and actually tries to send the
message to

GWIA:GWIA:johndoe@abc.com

fix

Create a new addressing rule that excludes anything starting with
GWIA.

To do this, start NWADMIN. Select Tools | GroupWise System
Operations | Addressing Rules | New

Description: Exclude GWIA
Name: Exclude GWIA
Search String: GWIA:*
Replace With: GWIA:%1

Select OK to create and then move the addressing rule to the
very top using the up arrow button. Check the rule to make it
available at the domain level. Open the domain details and
select the addressing rules tab. Check the rule to activate.
Restart the GWIA and the GroupWise client and test.
