fact
Novell NetWare 4
Formerly TID 2918511
Novell NetWare 5.0
symptom
Time is not synchronized to the network.
Error: "Synthetic time is being issued on partition <partition name>"
fix
If you are using you are using configured sources, verify that you can ping the timesync server
* Type Time on the command prompt. Is the time and date correct on that server? If it is in the future it most likely will have a future time stamp on one of the objects. This will cause a message `Synthetic time is being issued¿ until the server with the current time reaches the future time stamp on the object. If the time stamp is set to the year 2000 you will have to wait until the year 2000 for the `Synthetic time is being issued¿ to go away.
* Single Reference - It should only have to sync to itself, so if it is not, check to make sure there are not any other Single Reference servers listed (DSREPAIR | Time synchronization).
* Check your TIMESYNC.CFG for any mistakes go line by line through the TIMESYNC.CFG file in SERVMAN. If multiple servers appear on the "Time Source =" line, in timesync.cfg, separate them into separate lines. For example, Time Source = Serv1, Serv2 should be Time Source = Serv1 <newline> Time Source = Serv2.
* Make sure both `Default Time Server Type¿ and `Timesync Type¿ are the same then try and do a Timesync Restart Flag.
* If 'Timesync Restart Flag' fails try a `Timesync Reset¿ in Servman, if that fails then rename the TIMESYNC.CFG file in the system directory and go back into servman and recreate the TIMESYNC.CFG file. Double check all lines.
* If all lines in the TIMESYNC.CFG file are 100% correct and you have double checked all lines then try Unload TIMESYNC.NLM from the console prompt and Load TIMESYNC.NLM
Check SYS:\SYSTEM\TIMESYNC.NLM. If "Configured Sources = ON", verify that "Time Source = " contains a valid server name. If not, add the [SINGLE or PRIMARY] source server name (this line may be added at the end of the file if it does not already appear in the file). If "Configured Sources = OFF, verify that the "Time Source = " line does NOT contain a server name. If it does contain a server name, it can be remmed out with a pound sign at the beginning of the line ("#"). Then Unload TIMESYNC.NLM from the console prompt and Load TIMESYNC.NLM.
* An important thing to check when troubleshooting a timesync problem is to see if someone has filtered out the 026B (Time Sync) SAP packet. You can check for these using the file that ships with NetWare called IPXCON.NLM.
Load IPXCON.NLM. then select Services and it will start to build a list of all SAP traffic to this specific server. After the list has started to build then search for the server you are having problems communicating with. If you can see your specific tree 26b packet then they are not being filtered at the router level.
* If you are using configured sources you can point to all three types, Single/Primary and even a Secondary, for time. Make sure that the name is correct in ADD time source and that Timesync Configured sources is turned ON, and Service advertising is turned off.
Note: Even though you are using configured sources and do not need SAP type 026B, you still need to see the server you are configuring time to. This is found in IPXCON | Services, locate the server name and look for SAP type 0004. If you do not see it, router filtering may be enabled and time synchronization will fail.
* If it is a secondary that you are working with and everything looks good above then issue a restart flag and if it is successful, but it is still not in sync then be patient. It will take a while for the single/primary to broadcast.
* If you have a primary time server with the rest of the servers as secondaries, and you do not have a reference server, change the primary to a single.
