Knowledgebase

Request:

A cable-modem needs to be connected. The common use of the phrase describes a data communication set equipped with high capacity, using a modulated carrier to accommodate the high bandwith. Typically the cable-modem is connected to the provider with a coaxial cable, and to the computer with an Ethernet cable.

Procedure:

  1. The Ethernet card is fitted into the cabinet, if necesary the card is configured, see http://www.suse.de/sdb/en/html/rb_isapnp.html

  2. If the cable-modem contains a DHCP server, the package dhclient, series n must be installed. Documentation is available from

    • man dhclient

    • man dhclient-script

    • dhclient.conf

    • dhclient.leases

  3. Further manuals are located at http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/DHCP.html.

  4. Under normal circumstances, the only necessary configuration is the activation with YaST, using the version of December 13th, 1998 or later.
