Abstract

This file is to upgrade NGM 1.0b to GMHS 2.0. Global MHS 2.0 has support for SMTP, sender validation security enhancement, and improved asynch support.

Installation Instructions

NOTE: NetWare Global MHS was previously called NetWare Global Messaging.

UPGRADING FROM versions 1.0 or 1.0b to 2.0
                        ------------------
This file describes how to upgrade NetWare Global MHS from versions 1.0 and
1.0b to 2.0.

This upgrade provides the following fixes and enhancements:

1) The following changes are new in NGM 1.0b.

     a) Fixes an intermittent problem in which an asynchronous connection
disconnects when a NetWare Global MHS server is sending and receiving on
multiple inbound-and-outbound-asynchronous-connections at the same time.

     b) NetWare Global MHS 1.0 consumes more disk space han is necessary
for message storage. This upgrade deletes temporary files after they are
no longer necessary.

2) The following features are new in NGM 2.0.

     a) Support for SMTP protocol module. NGM 2.0 is required for running
the optional SMTP protocol module.
     b) Macintosh support. For more information, see Section APPLICATIONS
in the NetWare Global MHS README.TXT file.
     c) Improved security with sender validation. For more information,
see Section NGMSMF in the NetWare Global MHS README.TXT file.
     d) New mail notification. For more information, see Section NGMSMF in
the NetWare Global MHS README.TXT file.
     e) Improved flow control. For more information, see Section Improved
Flow Control in the NetWare Global MHS README.TXT file.
     f) More flexible directory synchronization schedule. For more
information, see Section Directory Synchronization in the NetWare Global
MHS README.TXT file.
     g) Support for new modems. For more information, see Section NGMAMP
in the NetWare Global MHS README.TXT file.
     h) Enhanced passive server support. For more information, see Section
ADMINISTRATION WITH NGMADMIN in the NetWare Global MHS README.TXT file.
     i) Improved asynchronous modem performance when delivering messages
between NGM servers.
     j) MHS now installs as an SMF v71 application. For more information,
see Section APPLICATIONS in the NetWare Global MHS README.TXT file.
     k) Updated AIO drivers for asynchronous communications on the diskette
NetWare AIO Drivers diskettes. If you use asynchronous communications
between messaging servers, be sure to use these updated drivers.
     l) Updated GWDEMON.EXE which now correctly passes the value of the
%MV% variable to the Gateway software.

NOTE: This patch is designed to upgrade NetWare Global MHS versions 1.0
and/or 1.0b to NetWare Global MHS version 2.0. If you have a version other
than 1.0 or 1.0b, this upgrade procedure will not work. To determine your
current NGM version, type 'MODULES' at the server console prompt and verify
that the version number for 'NGMADMIN.NLM' is 1.0 or 1.0b. If you have any
other version, contact your local Novell representative to receive the
appropriate upgrade for your system. This patch process will not change the
version number of NetWare Global MHS as it is reported from within
NetWare's INSTALL.NLM. INSTALL will continue to display "NGM 1.0 NetWare
Global Messaging".

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO FIRST?
                        ------------------
Use this upgrade to modify an existing NetWare Global MHS installation.
Before you install this upgrade, verify that NetWare Global MHS version 1.0
or 1.0b is installed on your server. For information on installing 1.0,
refer to your "Installing NetWare Global MHS" manual, part number
100-001200-001.

This upgrade does not change the serial number and maximum number of
licensed users for your NetWare Global MHS installation.

                      UPGRADING YOUR SERVER
                        ------------------
1. Login to your NGM server as supervisor.

2. Verify that your server has at least 8.0 MB of free hard disk space.
This is the recommended minimum required to install this upgrade.

3. The contents of the NGM137.EXE file are as follows:

        1. README.UPG
        2. PATCH.EXE
        3. PATCHNGM.BAT
        4. NGM20.RTP

4. Copy the files 'PATCH.EXE', 'PATCHNGM.BAT', and 'NGM20.RTP' to the root
NGM directory. The default NetWare Global MHS directory is <drive:>\NGM\.

        Sample: COPY PATCH.EXE <drive:>\NGM\*.*
                 COPY PATCHNGM.BAT <drive:>\NGM\*.*
                 COPY NGM20.RTP <drive:>\NGM\*.*

If you installed NetWare Global MHS in a different directory, be sure
to copy the upgrade files to that directory. For example, if NetWare
Global MHS is installed in the directory <drive:>\PUBLIC\MAIL\NGM\, enter
the following:

        Sample: COPY PATCH.EXE <drive:>\PUBLIC\MAIL\NGM\*.*
                 COPY PATCHNGM.BAT <drive:>\PUBLIC\MAIL\NGM\*.*
                 COPY NGM20.RTP <drive:>\PUBLIC\MAIL\NGM\*.*

The patch program searches all subdirectories to find the appropriate
files to upgrade. So, it is very important to start the upgrade procedure
from the correct directory.

5. Unload NGM at the server console and make a backup copy of your NetWare
Global MHS Directory structure.

IMPORTANT: Do not save backup files under the same directory structure
in which you installed NetWare Global MHS. The upgrade procedure will
update the first file within the directory structure. If this first file
happens to be a backup file, then the correct system file may not be
upgraded.

6. Change to the root NGM directory (where you copied the upgrade files).
Enter:

        PATCHNGM

The patch program upgrades all appropriate files. The patch program
also retains a log of the results in a file called 'RESULTS.TXT'. To
verify your upgrade installation, view the contents of 'RESULTS.TXT' after
the upgrade is complete.

7. After the patch process has completed the file GWDEMON.EXE will be
found in the root NGM directory (EX: <drive:>\NGM\GWDEMON.EXE). Copy this
file into your %MV%\MHS\EXE directory to update your system to the correct
version.

8. During the patch process a BACKUP directory is created under the
directory from which you ran 'PATCHNGM'. The BACKUP directory contains all
files that were changed and a file called 'UNPATCH.BAK'. If you want to
undo your upgrade and return your installation to its previous state,
perform the following procedure.

o To restore your system, change to the BACKUP directory, copy
'UNPATCH.BAK' to 'UNPATCH.BAT', and type "UNPATCH". This file will delete
all new files in the appropriate directories and replace them with the
files which originally existed.

o Verify the original files have been correctly re-installed and delete
the BACKUP directory before attempting to upgrade the system for a second
time.

Symptom
