symptom

Node fails to join cluster after OES SP2 update

fact

Novell Open Enterprise Server for Linux

Patching

symptom

Error 32 occurred while mounting volume

ERROR: clstrlib.conf is empty or missing

Error communicating with cluster (/_admin/Novell/Cluster/ClusterManage.cmd)

change

The node was working fine, but failed with errors after updating to OES SP2

cause

The clustering RPMs were backreved

A common cause is running 'rug pin oes:*' to update the server, instead of 'rug pin --entire-channel oes'

fix

Tasks to restore the node to the cluster:

1. Remove all known patches on the server

   rm -f /var/lib/YaST2/you/installed/*
   rm -f /var/cache/rcd/patch_data/*

2. Restart the Red Carpet daemon

   rcrcd stop
   rcrcd start

3. Follow the documented update process for OES SP2

Refer to section 6.8 Patching Quick Paths for Experts

4. Reconfigure clustering configuration files

   yast ncs
   Select Yes to reconfigure NCS

Novell Cluster Services (NCS) LDAP Server Configuration screen
Fill in the Admin context and password
   Select Next

Novell Cluster Services (NCS) Configuration screen
   Select (x) Existing Cluster
   Fill in the Cluster FDN
   Select Next

Novell Cluster Services (NCS) Configuration screen
Ensure the IP address for this node is correct
Deselect [ ] Start Clustering Services now
   Select Next

   You should get an error
"Failed to configure Novell Cluster Services (NCS):50."
This is normal and means that this node is already in
   eDirectory.
Select OK to clear the error and exit yast

5. Start Novell Clustering Services

   rcnovell-ncs start

note

Q: Why do the clustering rpms get backreved when running 'run pin oes:*'?

A: This command forces all patches in the channel to get installed on the server. Some of the clustering patches that are outdated are still part of an active patch that cannot be obsoleted yet. Running 'rug pin --entire-channel oes' avoids this problem.
