goal

Network Discovery and personal firewalls enabled

fact

Tally Systems TS.Census

Novell ZENworks Asset Management 7 - ZAM7

Novell ZENworks Asset Management 3.3 - ZAM3.3

ICMP must be enabled

SNMP requires UDP port 161 to be open

TS.Census or Zam client requires port 7461 ( or whatever port you have specified during the install)

WMI used DCOM and if you want the Network Discovery module to take advantage of that information then please refer to this whitepaer <http://www.microsoft.com/com/wpaper/dcomfw.asp> .

For the initial ping, we don't need any ports open (we just need ICMP enabled) but in order for the rest to work then we do need the certain above mentioned ports open.  However, if you want Network discovery scan to identify  the device then ports 135 and 445 needs to be open (which XP SP2 blocks this port by default).  ICMP requests need to be allowed as well.
