fact

Microsoft Windows Server 2003

Microsoft Windows Active Directory

Domain with at least one Backup Domain Controller

Active Directory group policies

ZENworks Management Agent

Workstation Windows Xp SP2

symptom

AD Login or Startup Scripts do not run

6.5 sp2 agent breaks startup scripts in AD group policies.

change

Installing Management Agent

cause

This condition only occurs in an unsupported environment when both ZENworks and AD Group Policies are deployed. This unsupportability has been documented in online documentation: http://www.novell.com/documentation/zenworks7/index.html?page=/documentation/zenworks7/dm7admin/data/a777rvi.html#bpc44y9

fix

To correct this issue and restore supportability, administrators can rename wmgrppol.dll in the C:\Program Files\Novell\ZENworks directory. This will disable ZEN Group Policies entirely, but administrators can continue to use AD Group Policies.

Another solution is to delete the ZENworks Group Policy footprint in the file system. Delete WM.Original, WM.UserCache, and/or WM.WksCache in the C:\Windows\System32 directory. These steps will clean the workstation of any remnant ZEN Group Policies from the workstation.

note

Steps to duplicate:

1.  Set up Active directory Domain controller, with Group policies.  Set the Domain controller to be DNS server
2.  Add three scripts to run on startup.
3.  Have the workstation join the domain.
4.  make sure that scripts run
5.  install the 6.5 sp2 agent on the workstation and notice that the scripts do not run.

This seems to be an issue where the agent now stops the group policies from AD from running the startup scripts.
