symptom

oes patch channel not visible after activating Open Enterprise Server (Linux based)

fact

Open Enterprise Server 9 (Linux based)

rug Red Carpet

symptom

After activating OES in rug/Red Carpet against the Novell update server (https://update.novell.com/data), the oes patch channel is not available for subscription.

cause

The oes-release package is not installed, therefore the /etc/novell-release file is not present on the system.

The Novell Update server tests to see if a client system has Open Enterprise Server installed before it makes the oes channel available for subscription or installation. If the file /etc/novell-release is not present on the system, the update server conclude the system is not an OES system.

fix

The /etc/novell-release file is installed by the package oes-release. If the oes-release package is available in YaST > Software > Install and Remove Packages, install it and reactivate the system with rug.

Occasionally the oes-release package is unavailable in YaST. In this case, retrieve the package from OES CD 2 at suse/i586/oes-release-9-1.i586.rpm. Install the rpm using rpm -i package_name.

The file /etc/novell-release can be created manually. It's contents should read as follows:

Novell Open Enterprise Server Linux (i586)

VERSION=9
